What pasture grass seed???

Hi our 40 acres was rented out and put into a corn crop. This has now been removed and it is ready for planting out.

My question is what type of grass seed do we put down?

To help you here is some general info:

1. We are in Ontario - Prince Edward County (south of the 401) lake O surrounds us pretty much.

2. We are going to have Yak and Reindeer - neither of which like nice rich grass. Ideally they prefer scrub!!!

3. We will make hay but only for the livestock to go through winter we will not be grain feeding as it taints the meat and neither animal should be on anything but grass or hay. So as long as the hay is not dusty then again I do not need nice sweet green hay.

4. We will be breeding so nothing which could cause calving / miscarrying issues.

Think thats it

Cheers for any advice.

Maybe you could do a native grass mixture, applying very few pounds per acre - let some of the dormant seed in your soil sprout naturally for the scrub.

You could even collect wild seed from your local vegetation and toss some of that in the mix.

You need to talk to whatever agency you have there that helps folks make those decisions. There are two many variables depending on locality.

In the U.S., we have the University Extension Office, or the Conservation District.

I don't know what corresponds to that.
