Importing livestock

Anybody here done that? Especially from overseas?
Curious as to your thoughts on the process and all the red tape one has to go through with the USDA.

I was about to import some cattle from Canada when they found their first mad cow. That was the end of that! I think it's easier from Canada because of NAFTA. Check with your department of ag for regulations and help. They helped me with all the paperwork and requirements.

Consider importing semen rather than animals. Lots cheaper and way easier!

I've never done it but I do know several people that have imported horses from Europe. I don't know if it's different for other types of livestock or not, but the biggest thing with that is the required quarantine for horses. There are only certain facilities that have the licensing to do it, so that can be almost as expensive as the transport itself.

And now, of course, with the low dollar, it's even less advantageous. As Jena said, probably more reasonable for a number of reasons, to import frozen semen.
