What kind of Snake is This?
It decided to help me build fence this evening.
I almost ran over it with the pickup. It curled up, hissed at me and made several attemps at biting my leg off. It was only about as big around as a Quarter (at it's fattest point...) and about 3' long.

Lucky you're not in Aust: It'd be recognised as a tiger snake - not real good for your health. lol

spotted adder or milk snake, scary but harmless, they do look some what like a copperhead at first glance in the wild, we have both here.

looks like a rat snake to me - but it is hard to be sure without the head and tail. Harmless - but they get BIG.

I'm in SE Nebraska. I TRIED to get better photos, but these are from my cell phone - and it didn't want to work very well.
It's head was about half the size of it's body. The whole thing was dark brown with darker brown spots it's whole length. It's underside was dull yellow. It watched me mess with my stupid cell phone for awhile, then went into it's hole.

Scrounger: Thanks for posting this! About two weeks ago, a Friday evening and about 60 degrees outside I go out to my car (barefoot of course!) and have a 9 inch Copperhead stike at my foot, his body glanced off the side of it. Needless to say he was disposed of. So I got on my snake witch hunt and discover that EXACT snake you posted. He has a thin whip like tail right? I'm not sure what it is either. The head looked like a pit viper, that spade shape, but the pupils were perfectly round. He wasn't agressive like the copperhead, but I think if the evening had been warmer he would have been. He was about 1'. Hope some answers come of this, I'd like to know too. We're in VA.

I'm going to say it's a Great Plains Rat Snake, based on the fact that it's in Nebraska.

Doesn't matter, it's a snake.............Kill it.
Hunt down it's family and kill them too.

no no no no no! Snakes are a very important part of the ecosystem. Unless it is poisonous and you are in danger, let it live. I just don't understand the "KILL KILL KILL" attitude that persists. I guess it's spurned by fear.
Peace,

I'm with Cornhusker on this one! Snakes just give me the heebie jeeebies. Doesn't help that we have copperheads here. We did find one very similar to that one a few years ago though. It was an aggressice little thing.

it is important to see the head to see what shape it is. I don't know what this snake is, but I can identify a copperhead if I see its head. It will be a trianglar shape. Also a copperhead will have a slit in their eyes, not a roundness like people do. I have killed many a copperhead with a garden hoe. I DO NOT kill any other snake. Snakes are so beneficial it is not funny. We have black snakes living in the rock wall right outside the basement door. I'll take any non-poisonous snake any day, over dealing with what they eat (rodents).

Yup! Really thin, whip tail and the head was small, triangle shaped. He took several lunges at me while I was messing with my cell phone. He had round eyes.

Definately NOT a copperhead. And shame on you that kill, kill, kill snakes. I'd rather have snakes than the stupid mice & rats that chew, chew, chew & poop, poop, poop on everything.
Now that I've got everybody "mad" at me for saying pooh on those that kill snakes, I might as well say that I actually even relocate the copperheads that we find near the buildings.
