Fencing: Splices

I was wondering about your opinions on the steel ferrule crimp on splices that are available for barb/woven wire.
I have been using them for the past 3 years and have had great results. It makes a nice clean splice instead of a twisted one. At first, I was using a set of bolt cutters to crimp them (adjusted them out so they wouldn't cut....). My wife bought me the correct tool for my birthday last year. Works a lot better....
Anyone else use them?

I use them too, and like them okay. I use them to tie the wire on the start of the run, and for any splices. I've had one splice fail, but that was more my fault than the splice.

I also use them, on field fencing. There definately is a difference in price. The cheap ones work ok, but require me to bend the ends of the wire over. The much more expensive ones that are hour-glass shaped, and use the expensive crimper, work superbly just on their own.

We just splice the old-fashioned way. stretch the fence up tight, take the two broken ends, make a loop in one end, string the other through and then loop it back on itself. Fast, free and easy.
It'll last for years that way...

Where do you get these things? What do you mean by expensive vs. inexpensive?

Thank you,

Don

I got mine at Orschlen's (it's like TSC...). Well worth the money. It REALLY saves time and you don't have any of those nasty looking knots in the fence.

We used them on our feild fence, with a crimper.

Boy, it sure is a workout for my girly arms crimping them but they hold great and I think they look nice too.
