Should I Borrow The Tractor

Been talking with a Guy about buying his Tractor.Well he is not sure he wants to sell it.

He is going to be gone a few months and told my Son I could borrow it.If I did we would be working on our road and putting in couple Food Plots for the Animals.

I don't know if I should do this or just go buy another one.

I would not borrow it. If anything goes wrong or breaks, it will be up to you to fix it. Go find another tractor, not worth the risk.

Unless you were very good friends with the guy I suggest you pass. As pointed out if ANYTHING goes wrong while you have it you'll need to fix it but that would apply if it were your own tractor. What'd I'd be worried about is things going wrong after I returned it and the guy claiming the problem came from something I did while I had it.

B.R. Follow the advise given. Tractor parts are not cheap, this Missouri ground is hard I have to replace a tie rod on my Case/IH parts only cost over $70. Sunday my starter went out I pick it up today $372. My tractor is in good condition and properly maintained not abused just used. I have borrowed equipment used neighbor's spreader tire repair was $70. I would rather repair mine than loose a friend.

I only borrow larger equipment like that if the operator comes with it.

We swap tractors within the family a lot, and it usally works out. There is a rule though: If it breaks, you fix it.

Nope. I only have one neighbour who I trade tractors with now and then, known him all my life.

A $300 or $400 part isn't a big deal. A transmission or front end job on an MFWD tractor could bankrupt many people.

I would use his tractor, he told your son you could, why snub him.. If it breaks own, have it fixed, no big deal. get your work done, service it and take it back.
If you buy one, it could break down also, you would have to get it fixed and look at it everyday that you don't need it and wonder why you bought it. why be stubbern?
i have an old 350 case loader that i don't know where it is weeks at a time.JMO

Nope - don't do it. All the reasons stated above are good enough to avoid the problems.

I can speak from experience on this one. I needed a tractor for some clearing and some mowing (regularly). A friend down the road had a Ford with all the necessary 3-point equipment. He let me borrow it once because he was thinking about selling it and buying one with a front-end loader. I borrowed it and used it without incident. We ended up striking up a deal. I gave him half of what he paid for the tractor for 1/2 interest in the tractor and the implements. We both could use it whenever we needed it. We each put fuel in it as needed. When a repair bill arrived we split it 50/50. This was the greatest idea - in theory. I kept waiting for the repair bill to arrive for something that was completely operator error related. Fortunately it never arrived ... I bought his 50% outright and now own the tractor.

The potential headache and frustration is just not worth it. Get your own tractor or hire someone to do the work for you if it is not ongoing.

I am cursed when it comes to borrowing things. They always break when I have them, so I make it a policy to not borrow anything with an engine, motor or breakable parts.

Don't worry... if I become anyone's neighbor I promise not to borrow anything!

Have borrowed a tractor from a couple of different neighbors and never had a problem.
Always borrow from the guy who takes care of his stuff. Less chance it will crap out on you.
