Exclamation Tools of the Homestead

Alright this weekend we rented a tiller and dug up the rest of the 48x100 foot garden. Back in March, after we got settled in from the move here, we dug by hand 3 rows to plant the onions, broccoli, brussel sprouts and cabbage. Those 3 rows did not take too long but it was a daunting task with the overgrowth and such and way faster to do with the tiller. I am unsure if the other part of the garden would have been completed in time to plant.

All that being said, it got me to thinking about what if we did not have the modern conveniences of the gas powered tiller? My hoe and rake and good old fashioned leg/back work come to play getting the first 3 rows ready. That could have been aided by a mule and plow (if we had them). I have started a list of the tools that we use regularly around here, both modern and a list of old fashioned tools that we should purchase if there were to come a day when the modern tools would not work. Help me out here and add your two cents.

MODERN
tillar
riding lawn mower
weed eater
drill
circular saw
chain saw

HAND TOOLS
sling blade- have
post hole diggars- have
two man saw
hand held saw
screwdrivers-have
rachet sets-have
crowbar-have
push mower ( the old kind w/ no motor)
old disc plow and animal to pull it
shovels-have
rakes both sturdy gardening kind and leaf raking kind- have
hoes-have
measuring tape-have
old fashioned hand drill
axes
mall or wedge

I know I am probably missing a whole lot of items, both modern and old fashioned. I am working from memory on the old fashioned tools, seeing my grandpa use some of them and seeing the things my grandma had after he died. I also understand that for folks in colder climates would need different tools. Add em all! I wanna see what we need to get for those "just in case" times.

It took many years but I now have a tractor with a bucket, a bush hog and post digger which I now think of as "must have".
