Flea and Tick Control

Heard on our local radio green thumb program, that granulated Sulfur is good for fleas, ticks and snakes in the yard. Has anyone tried it? Would it be toxic to chickens and pets ?

I doubt it would hurt the chickens since it would wash away quickly. And it wont kill or repel snakes anyway so it's really a waste of time and money

Sulfur is often used in flea shampoos, but since shampoos DROWN the fleas, it's a waste there also

Be Aware of Certain Non-Performing Products
Research data have shown that ultrasonic flea collars and other ultrasonic devices do not repel fleas, interfere with reproduction, or alter flea development. The use of brewers? yeast, garlic, B-complex vitamins and elemental sulfur products as flea repellents is common practice but these products are not effective.

The local hardware gal told me last year that she FEEDS sulphur to her dogs to control fleas. I don't know what it would do to the dog.. but she pointed me in the dirction of the big bags used for lawn and garden stuff.

There are all kinds of sulfur supplements, and people have consumed sulfur-water as a remedy for all sorts of ailments, so I doubt it would hurt the dogs. Just make sure it doesn't contain anything else that could be harmful. If it works, I'd sure like to know, I could use it myself. Maybe I'll start taking some as a supplelment myself, I'm sure tired of being bitten.

I'd rather have critters that smell of sulfur than be bitten by fleas and ticks, and I'D rather smell like sulfur myself. I spend a fair amount of time outdoors, I've picked a good many ticks off of myself so far this year, and already been bitten by ticks at least a dozen times, this year.

Bathing an animal DOES NOT drown the fleas! They are amazingly resistant to drowning. So if a sulfur shampoo does reduce the fleas, it's not just because the animal was wet. Ticks are even harder to kill. I don't think those buggers drown at all.

I think it is worth a try, we didn't have much luck with Frontline last year, it had worked great for us for years on our dog and cat. It took care of the ticks, but the flea's were not affected at all.

We use both granulated sulfur & powdered. Sprinkle the granulated around our shed (don't have a house on the land yet so the shed is our headquarters) and it keeps the fleas & ticks out of the area. I think it repels beneficials too but we just use it in a limited area. Put the powdered in a sock & powder ourselves w/it. We never have a tick on us.

Patty
PS-keeps the chiggers off too!

[COLOR="Red"]Bathing actually does kill fleas, use a highly soapy shampoo (I use name brand baby shampoo) Make sure you leave it on at least 5 minutes, and regularly rub it back to a foam and watch out near the face where the fleas will flee to escape the drowning. Then rince and all the fleas are dead. Another lower cost remidy is Diatamatious Earth, you can sprinkle it around and in bedding, even on the dog/cat. Finally, Frontline package says it repels fleas for 3 months, so you could just use it every 3 months, as opposed to monthly, cutting the cost.(it only repels ticks for 1 month though)
