We have had 3 Isuzu Troopers, all of them used. I LOVED them. Hubby hated them. Because when they went bad, you are right, it was very expensive. Usually a cracked head, which costs $$$$$$$$ to fix, especially on a used car with very high mileage.
By contrast, we bought a used VW station wagon, it's my work car, a year and a half ago. It had 16,000 miles on it. Today it has 98,785 miles on it, and we just had to replace the axle joints/shaft on the front end. (I drive 120 miles a day for work, more on the weekends) Fortunately we had purchased the extended warranty, good for up to 100,000 miles. Thank goodness.
Anywho, back to your question - our experience confirms what you heard. Others may have had better luck, I loved driving them and would have one again if finances allowed buying a new one (dream on).

HAH!!! Don't get me started. I bought an Isuzu Rodeo. ONE WEEK after the warranty ran out -- the engine blew. Even before that, I had more freaking problems with that hunk of garbage -- I have never had to put so much money into the maintenance of a vehicle -- EVER. I had to replace the engine ($8000) just to sell the stupid thing -- which I still owed $18K on.

Garbage, garbage, garbage. Never again. NEVER.

Depends on what engine you got. The body was rebadged as an S-10, but the nice little deisel wasn't (TMK). It could be a problem getting parts for it.
