Bread....lots of Bread

Stopped by the local discount bread store to get some hoagie loafs and asked about out of date bread for our chickens. Was $11.00 for 15 flats, and 15 flats is a lot of bread.

Got it home and started unloading and found some loaves that were not out until the 22, 27, of April, but were really smushed up. My question is this....am I the only one who would plan to use this for human consumption. Inspected the loaves, no mold, not even hard, just squished.....make really nice croûtons and such.

So am I (and my wife) alone in this thinking?

Thanks

Joseph

Whenever I get alot of bread this way, I pick out whats still good, put some out for use, and the rest along with any older loaves go into the freezer. I take the squished ones and save them for the chickens.

I'd use it for us! Croutons, bread crumbs for dredging or adding to recipes, a couple of pieces for stretching meat loaf and one of my favorites *bread pudding*! I've got plenty of room in my freezer, if you don't have enough room in yours! Great find!

No, you are NOT alone! I'd ise the bread for the family if it were still good - animals otherwise.

When I was a boy we used to buy feed bread like that and always pulled out the best stuff for us to eat.

If I get hogs this fall like I'm thinking of we'll buy feed bread again if I can find an outlet. We make all of our own bread now though so we won't be eating any ourselves.

We keep the in date loaves, put some in the freezer, share with neighbors, the critters get the rest, we put them in the freezer, take out so many a day for the goats, chickens, etc. Makes great bread pudding as well. Lately, here, they slash the tops, so it is basically fit only for the critters. Hate it when they do that, the bread falls out when you are trying to move it.

We always go through the "pet food" bread we get like this and take out anything that is still in date and use it for us. Of course I look it over pretty close and make sure there is no holes in the bag, ect. - but most of the time the only reason it is being sold like that is because it got squished. It is perfectly fine to eat - just not pretty. The rest gets feed to the goats and and some to the dogs. I would like to get some pigs this summer and feed them this bread and extra milk from the goats.
