'Mom, will you cook this for me for dinner?'

says my 4 yr old - while proudly handing me a small earthworm held in his very grubby hand.

We TRIED to talk him out of it - he insisted. So I microwaved the little thing in some butter (after washing it copiously).

Mitchie picked it out and, grinning from ear to ear, popped it into his mouth. Chewed. Smiled. Then (much to our relief) spat it out, declaring it tasted like mud.

Can't wait to see this kid when he turns 7. Hang on, Mom, it's gonna be a wild ride!

When the University of Colorado raised some for food purposes... in the late 70's..

You're suppose to boil the dirt out of them, then dry then fry them. Crispies to put in quiches and such.

You know, Angie, my intent was not to start a food trend in our house!

Yeah, I knew worms were supposed to be really high in protein and that many cultures eat bugs. But mostly I knew that it was easier to let Mitch try a worm than to talk him out of it. LOL.

Well,,,, you know, being mod of the survival forum does something to a person's outlook - seeing an emergency food source! :banana02:

Oh my gosh, this reminds me of a book I read when I was a kid called "How To Eat Fried Worms" They didn't have microwave ovens back then (early '70's) or I'm sure the book would have been titled "How To Microwave Worms"

there is a pretty decent movie rendetion of that book out - I think it won some award within the last 2 years. Mitch has seen it and I'm sure the movie had some influence on his request.

Earthworms are tasty! Try this with DS.. catch earthworms (his part) and let them live in applesauce for several days until all the soil has been replaced by the apples.
Be kind and put them in the freezer to dispatch them.. a little egg and some flour and into a fry pan they go.. little protein rich apple crisps! YUM!

I didn't see the movie version, but the book was one of my favorites and I read it several times. Almost tempted ME into trying it!

Well now, you are the prototype for an excellent country mama!

Once, when my son was a sprout, he carried three worms around for awhile. Next thing I knew, he had two worms in his hand and dirt all over his mouth. I asked him if he ate it, and he just giggled! I guess they will try anything once!

Are you kidding? ALL kids know what mud tastes like, if they're normal kids!
