Can a man still "homestead" anywhere in America or do you actually have to buy or already own a bunch of undeveloped land to live?Has the term "homestead" lost it's meaning or is there still hope?Thanks All.

There is no longer an active Homesteading Act, anywhere in North America, as far as I'm aware.

Sorry, these days you actually have to pay for land you claim as your own.

Actually the work "homestead" pre-dates the free land "Homestead Act" by at least 500 years. Before the free land program the term meant a self-sustaining, independant farm. In that sense it still has meaning.

There is no more free land from the feds. There have been some very depressed small towns and very rural counties that were giving away land under terms that resembled the US Homestead act. This was land that they could not sell for back taxes, but I don't have a link to any.
