washing machine lint filters?

New to having a septic tank but have heard that installing a lint filter will
prolong the life of the septic system. Can anyone recommend a specific type of filter to buy? I have searched and find all price ranges and styles...just curious what works for you. Thanks.

The Filtrol brand of filter is stongly marketed in our area. IMHO, it works no better than an old nylon strapped to the washing machine,s discharge hose.

I'd encourage septic tank owners to have an effluent filter installed. This type of filter will not only capture lint from washing machines, but also other forms of suspended material that might enter the septic system. The photo below shows the type of effluent filter we have. It's simply a 4" bottle brush that slides into the outlet baffle of the septic tank. A word of caution, if you have a effluent filter installed....CLEAN IT REGULARLY!!! If it ever becomes plugged, wastewater will back-up into your home. Some filters come with an alarm to warn the homeowner that it is time to clean it.

Do a little google'ing and you'll find a couple. The one I'm looking at has a stainless steel filter which you clean and reuse forever as opposed to the one shown above which needs the filter replaced at around $20 a pop.

This is not for a washer but your drier filter or screen. If you use fabric softner or sheets take your screen to a facet and let water drip on it. If the water runs off other than thru it wash with dish soap until water goes thru it. This will extend the life of your drier, and help dry your clothes faster. Sam

We just rinse ours good with a garden hose and pop it back in.
