Gotta rave about SW Harmony paint

Last year we had a room painted. I've ALWAYS painted everything in the house and this was the first time we'd had a room done by someone else. There wasn't any other choice though because DH (while an awesome plumber, electrician and carpenter) can NOT paint and my lungs were so bad at that point that I just couldn't dream of painting. Not long ago I was reading in a magazine about paints that were low odor and had low or no volatile organic compounds (VOC). I did a little surfing online and found this article: http://eartheasy.com/live_nontoxic_paints.htm listing a bunch of options for low and no VOC paints. I decided on two (Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams) that were names I knew and were close enough to us to find easily. DH insisted on Sherwin Williams so he picked up a bunch of primer for me.

Let me tell you, I can't say enough good things about this paint. Both DH and I have trouble with odors and I painted the entire kitchen with no problem at all. It did have a little odor but even being right in it for hours I didn't have any reaction. After I was done painting I walked the dog for an hour and when I came back in there was a faint odor. A few hours later we were out again and when I came back in there was no odor at all.

Then there is the coverage! I have used both Zinsser and Kilz in the past and this stuff with ONE COAT had better coverage than two coats of either the Zinsser or the Kilz, sometimes two coats of primer plus a coat of paint! Anyway, very impressive. Just thought that I'd rave a bit. So often we hear rants but not that often we come across a product that wows us. It is expensive. Until the end of March the paint is $7-8 off per gallon and it was still over $30 a gallon. I may go back and stock up since I had hoped to repaint the whole downstairs this year. I am so glad this paint works for me so that I can do it myself! Even at $40 a gallon it would still be cheaper for me if I can paint it myself. I do a better job anyway

Just goes to show:

1.) You get what you pay for with paint. Buy cheap stuff, get cheap results. Cheap paint also gets you more mess, more clean up, a worse job, costs more time, doesn't hold up well, etc.

One of the worst things that a homeowner can do is to use cheap exterior paints on homes and outbuildings.

2.) Kilz paints proves that marketing works. Other than spot sealing water damage in drywall, I still cannot figure out why anyone in their right mind would ever buy or use that junk. (Go ahead....flame me for that comment if you want.)

If you really want to get a good deal on paint, comparison shop. Let them know how much you need, and then tell your SW rep that you can get the same low odor stuff from Porter, Ben Moore for $XX a gallon. They almost ALWAYS price match.

Thanks for that tip! I hope to do a LOT of painting this summer. No flames here. I HATE the Kilz stuff! Didn't realize until now that there was better out there.
