Yep, you can feed it to the animals. Makes EXCELLENT cornmeal. It's just corn. Slightly different starchy but still corn. I've ground it before, cooked it as mush, and added extras to feed to my dogs in hard times...

I also have a few pounds of old popcorn that I don't want to pop. If I give it to the chickens, should I run it thru the grinder first? Or are they okay with it whole?

The chickens will do fine with it whole, so long as they have access to grit. Planting it is a GREAT idea. You have 75 lbs now, next fall you can have a couple thousand pounds. It will still be fine then to either pop or feed to your animals. If you intend to pop it, and pick it in the fall, make sure you air dry it at least until new years.

My chickens will turn up their beaks at cracked corn, but they sure love whole corn. They should have easy access to grit, I would suppose, to aid in crop grinding.

BQZ, you can always ship it to me! We're popcorn fiends here.

Planting? I know sweet corn germination drops quickly (or so they say), although we have planted 3 year old sweet corn with only a little change. Is this popcorn you grew yourself? Stored cool & dry? You could test germination by putting 10 or 20 kernels between double layers of damp paper towel, and keep on top of fridge (temp) to check for germination. I know you have to keep the seeds damp, not sure if they should be in a plastic bag or not.

I read somewhere (Gene Logsdon or Carla Emery) that popcorn, being a flint corn, makes FABULOUS cornmeal.

No,I probably should have mentioned it is in 50 lb bag bought at Sam's club for festival and didn't use, that's why I was wondering if it could be planted,I wasn't sure if it had some kid of chemical on it or not.

It is extremly likely that it is a hybrid variety and not open pollinated. It would not reproduce a quality popcorn. If you just wanted the stalks, go ahead and plant it.

Pop it and then give it to the chickens! I've never seen my hens jump very high until I gave them some popped popcorn! They love the stuff and will do anything for it - even jump over the poor unsuspecting rooster that got in their way!

If you have an air popper, you could use air-popped corn in lieu of packing peanuts. I don't know if you do much packaging/shipping, but I've heard it works well for that purpose.

I agree! My chickens and goats go nuts for popped popcorn!

A little pet peeve of mine---more correctly----It may not rather than would not reproduce a quality popcorn.

Some hybrids may reproduce correctly for a few years before reverting back to their parental lines. Wheat is an excellent example in that from foundation seed we may get registered seed, then certified seed, then once again certified seed before it is no longer considered variety safe to plant.

I decided to try to sprout some like I do alfalfa seed, but I couldn't find any info on how long to soak it first. Anyone know? I hope it will work because my chickens LOVE anything sprouted.

My popcorn is sprouting! :banana02:

I wasn't sure it would since it's at least 10 years old - maybe older.

We make popcorn for the ducks and chickens as a treat. Makes their eggs taste wonderful.

Our former goats liked it too, but they got fat.
