Who's Been to Dauphin Island?

Thinking of going to Dauphin Island off the coast of AL for a few days. Saw a cute cottage for rent that will allow dogs. I need a vacation!

If anyone has been there, let me know how it is. Thanks.

Patty

We used to visit Dauphin Island when we would vacation at Gulf Shores in my youth. It was beautiful and we really enjoyed it there. Of course, that was 14 years and few hurricanes ago- but I bet it's still nice!

It was a really nice place in 1998 or 1999 when I last went. It was a quiet, relaxed place. We went in mid-March. No crowds and it was warm enough by then. Then it was a great deal price wise as well. Don't know anything about cost now though. I would love to go back, but really can't justify it living so close to the beach here now.

Thanks for the replies. We can rent a 2 bdrm cottage for $75/nite. Doesn't seem to be a lot of places to eat but if we're only there 3 days I guess we could try 'em all.

Hi Patty
I was there about 6 months after Katrina. The hostess of the bed & breakfast took us on a disaster tour. The whole island shifted over about 100 yards. The beaches were getting back to normal, but there were very few places to go out for dinner. One of the best food places on the island was also the Exxon station!

Call and ask the proprietor of the cabin.

We were there the year before Katrina, so I'm not sure what has happened since then. But there were very few places on the island to eat out - not a bad thing in my opinion but many on vacation like to eat out a lot. There are no major stores, so you'll want to bring (or pick up your groceries) before you get to the island. It is a nice quaint place, good for riding bikes, playing tennis, reading and relaxing, etc.....

If you go off season, the few restaurants may all be closed, or only open on weekends.

We took a family vacation there in '97. There were only two hotels at the time. If you don't like the beach...a lot, don't go! We loved it, not a lot of places to eat out. Definitely buy your groceries before you get on the island, they were outrageous there!

Thanks, all of you, esp for the grocery info.
