Location, Location, Location!!!!!
I just read a thread that asked for information to help a HTer. I had a very good suggestion to help with their scenario; However, the suggestion was location dependent. When I looked for the HTers location in their profile there was nothing.
So here is my rant.
If you want advice that may dependent on your location PUT YOUR LOCATION IN YOUR PROFILE, SIGNATURE, OR MESSAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YES!! No one is giving away their address by letting the rest of us know what state they happen to live in.

I have to admit that drives me nuts. I love knowing when a fellow HomeSteader lives near me.

Agreed (and I went ahead and updated mine!).
I'm in the minority of urban dwellers here, and it's nice to know who else has a tiny apartment with three hours of sunlight!

Ditto
I have mine posted because being in FL we have some real peculiar problems. Some are Warm winters, hurricanes, hot muggy summers, and bugs, bugs, and more bugs.
And worst yet I'm in the land of the mouse (Mickey that is) which brings even more problems (people mostly).

Although I have no problem posting my location, and I agree that location can be important when asking certain questions, I can respect people who choose not to divulge the information.
I've known a few people who have been stalked, both "in real life" and online, and they tend to not have profiles with ANY identifyable info including location (or they use bogus info.) They also tend to not discuss their reasons online, so if someone chooses not to let the world know where they are, I assume they probably have a reason they'd rather not discuss.

Dutch, up in the upper left hand corner of the screen, click on "User CP"
Then, on the left column, click on "edit profile". Scroll down some, and they give you options to type in where you are.

If folks are worried about being stalked then maybe they shouldn't be asking questions that require location specifics in order to receive an accurate answer.

What could it hurt to at least put the state? It would be one dead "person" who would stalk me. Fear is torment.
Also, instead of asking for a location when it's needed in order to answer the question, just ignore it altogether. This might be considered mean but this is what I do.

There ya go. No need for ya'll to go gittin your panties in a pucker because someone doesn't care to give thier location. When someone posts a question asking how much this or that might cost I don't have a coniption fit because they left out what their income is so that I might judge if they can afford it. I'll grant that their disposable income might indeed have an impact on an answer, but I don't think it's any of my business. I could answer along the lines: 'if I had this much then this, or if I had THIS much then that'. Likewise if someone asked a question such as 'how much wood to heat in the winter' I might answer along the lines of 'well here in (secret farmer willy location only given on a need to know, if I tell you then I'd have to---'witness protectionify' ya) we use 'X' amount. Wellllll lookie there! An answer!!! And I didn't even have to know where they lived or hung their hat!!! I didn't need a DNA swab, a co-signer, or references. I didn't need patents of homesteadity. Now, back to my double secret lair somewhere in the Eastern half of North America. Maybe.

I've yet to see anyone withhold their opinions because someone else does not do exactly what the opinion poster wishes (demands?) that they do
You do realize in sharing your opinion you are giving your approval for the thing you have choosen to have a problem with, right?
Hugs,
Marlene

Exactly. Don't hold back help or an opinion just because you don't know the persons location, your answer might help out someone else in their location. Just share the info or opinion without having a hissy girl baby fit ya'll.

Actually, they did a study and boy babies were much more likely to pitch a fit and cry for their mommies way before girl babies did. Apparently, that IS a gender specific difference. Ha! It was some ivy league university did the study, Yale, Harvard or Stanford or some such.
Still, it is kinda handy to know sort of where the person posting is coming from. Just 'cuz folks from one place may react differently than folks from another place. If someone asks a question and they are from California, would you give them a different answer if they were from Maine? Maybe so!

Yale or Harvard. I got them pegged as a bunch of gender bending sissy boys so I reject their claims. I'll wait till word comes out from TA&M.

Well of course the answer would be different if we know where they are from. The point is if they for some reason do not wish to give their whereabouts I'm not going to ignore them or scourge them for keeping their secret. It doesn't tilt my world off it's axis. I'll stick with giving the best answer I can for the double secret location where we live, they can adjust it from there. If they want better info they need to give more info.
