Control Of Yucca Plants

Those of us who live in Texas and throughout the Southwest know what a pest Yucca plants are in pastures and just about everywhere else. Texas A&M has come up with new recommended control measures. Be prepared - its costly, but if it works its worth it.

just looked at the site, do they realize you can be charged by the fed for dumping diesel for improper disposal of hazardous material. seriously if one of my Marines dumps a gallon on the ground, he, the commanding officer & everybody in between is subject to federal prosecution with a possible fine of $10,000 and 2 years in jail.

How about digging the roots and using them for soap?

Surely as soon as they are found to be useful, they will stop propagating quite so much!

Getting your daily fiber.

Well there is one thing for certain---a person should get their daily fiber from eating just one helping. Talk about stringy and fibrous, those plant leaves certainly are.

I've seen some pastures so covered with yucca that eating the plants and using the roots for soap should keep the entire world population supplied.

The Mexicans eat them here in Georgia. Surely you have Mexicans in Texas. You have a good crop you can sell there.
Thanks Jen

Gosh, I hate those things. We had them planted *on purpose* at our first house, didn't think we'd ever get rid of them.

Windy
the young stalks are tender same as the young stalks of asparagus.
like sage morgan said as soon as you want them to propagate because you are selling the stalks at the local flea market, they'll die back and leave you w/o a cash crop.

Yup. My wife's grandma planted some of those evil things ON PURPOSE! We dug the roots down about 3' and covered the ends with salt, then buried the whole mess and planted grass over the top. Ain't come back in 10 years, so I figure they're dead.....

You can also get strings from the yucca for sewing. The Apace utilized it for that purpose and also for soap....
