Propane stock tank heaters

I came back from an auction today with two Trojan Propane stock tank de-icers. Anyone have any experience with them? I remember Dad having one when I was little, but that was eons ago. Is it more cost worthy to run the electric or the propane?

Kinda late in the season to figure out, but at $5 for the pair, with regulators, I couldn't pass it up. Both of them do work though (at least they light....).

I think the electric are probably better overall if you happen to have electric there at the tank. Propane is way better if you don't.

My favorite by far is the ether tube, don't need any energy source.

We have the Trojan blue tube propane heater with the "boot" in the water and just LOVE it. No chance of horses chewing on the cord or shock risk. 1 mini tank of propane last all winter. We are in IL and for the most part have mild winters. We run ours on pilot light during most of the winter and one for Dec and Jan when the temps really fall for long periods of time. Only down fall is when we are having 40-50 MPH wind gust it can blow the flame out and have to be relit. Not hard but a pain when it is really cold.

For the price you paid you got a steal!

I don't know about propane heaters, but I have an electric one that has a thermostat on it. Works great, and I had to run a long (heavy duty) electrical cord. Install it & forget it.

I will say that my donkey plays with anything & I ended up having to set it on a tire rim then put another rim on top to keep it from being moved...Silly boy.
