when yhe furnace is inside, it is connected to a chimney so the smoke will be 15-30 feet up in the air and won't be going in anyones windows

I have a Hardy brand furnace. Mine is wood only and if I was doing it again, which will be in 10 or 15 years, I'll go with a dual fuel, wood/propane, so that if I'm away I don't have to worry about shutting down the blowers and such. Works as expected though and for the last 7 years I have had no issues

I've been using a Free heat Machine www.freeheatmachine.com for a few years now and really like it. It doesn't smoke much at all. Very similar to an indoor woodstove as far as smoke is concerned. That is, if burning dry seasoned hardwood. If you burn green wood or greasy oily pallets I'm sure it will smoke like crazy. Thts the main reason owb's smoke so much. POOR CHOICE OF FUEL! Burn dry wood, and it won't smoke much at all. At least mine doesn't.

My husband and I have been looking into these for years. The boilers put out by these companies are not cheap but it is what we whittled the field down to.

The main reason we are considering these is that they seem to be some of the most efficent boilers out there as they are wood gassification units. They are also some of the cleanest burning units we have found.

Oddly enough, we still don't have a wood burner. Because now we're looking at this...

Extremely expensive but will burn not only wood, but wood chips, pellets, etc. And it has an automatic feeder. We are heating a large home as well as several outbuildings so this may not be for everyone.


I have to say that Alternate Heating Systems had very impressive boilers and, had we not found the Goliath, we probably would have gone with them. They can also have an oil back up for when you go away.
