porch help

what is the best way to protect my porch (wood) decking that is exposed to the weather. paint, stain or??? i kind of remember my dad useing some kind of oil....thanks for answers...........i'll ck back later............sue i live in georgia. also names of stains, paint or whatever.............

If there was a "BEST" way of protecting your deck, everyone would be doing it that way and you'll only get one answer to your question. I'll venture that you'll get six to a dozen different recommendations in this thread.

What type of wood is your deck made of and how has it been treated in the past? A person needs to know this in order to give you a good recommendation. For example, if the deck was treated with Thompson's Water Seal in the past, you're not going to be able to apply any type of stain that someone might recommend in the future (unless you totally sand off the water seal).
