Woodpeckers
I have 2 woodpeckers chipping away on my MH roor they have been doing this for a month now, right now we are in the middle of a thunder ice strom and they are up there just pecking away.
There seem to be only 3 spots that they keep going back too. I have all these big oak trees all around the MH and they want nothing to do with them right now.
Other than shooting them I will not do I go out and shoo them away but they come right back a few moments later the thing that gets me the most is they are very early risers they get to work about 6;30am and go until about noon.
So what could be up there that they like? and will they be able to make a big hole in the roof?
It is driving the cat and dog crazy with the pecking as the cat tries to get up as high as she can to the noise coming through the celing.,Paula

My aunt and uncle had the same problem with one area on their cedar siding. They ended up putting a small piece of sheet metal over the spot. There were no bugs in the wood, just a good spot for the woodpeckers to excavate a nest. Woodpeckers left the house alone after the sheet metal was put up.

My mom had the same problem. She had to get some bird shot .22 bullets to put an end to it. She did not want to kill the little guy, but the woodpecker was just causing too much damage to the house. I have seen other folks who nail a mouse trap vertically near the holes, but I would think that you might kill too many "good" birds with that option.

Get a fake owl or hawk and put on e pole higher than the roof. Should keek them away. Sam
PS Or get a real looking snake and put on the roof close to where they are pecking.

A couple of years ago a couple of pilated woodpeckers ( THE BIG ONES) were after carpenter bee larva under my carport. They did a lot of damage. I put silicon in the bee holes and have not had any more problems. This spring I'll watch for the bees and try to stop them from boring into the wood. It was kinda funny, my wife thought someone was knocking on the door but when she checked ,no one was there. Next time she checked, caught the peckers in the act. LOL

Rip out the zipper from an old pair of pants and lay it near the area where that said birds are doing their handywork. They will scurry away when they see the zipper and remember how much it hurt the last time they got their peckers caught in one.

Lean a long board up against the roof so the cat can get up there.

FYI anyone ...Ivory Bills are near to extint if not extinct to my knowledge ...I think there may have been a 'sighting' reported in Fla a year or so ago ...Pileated-s are endagered as well ...most woodpeckers are endagered in fact, as well as all cavity nesting birds, due to loss of habitat ...I hate to hear about shooting any of them. Our home is sided w/cedar shingles & we have trouble from time to time ...often the birds are 'drumming' to establish territory & attract mates ...during late winter that may be the case ...sometimes I don't know why they do it ...

That reminds me of when I was about 8 or 9 years old. Me and a friend would go" YELLOW HAMMER HUNTING " in tobacco barns with our air rifles. One day out to the country store an old farmer asked us if we was still hunting them "yellow hammers", we said yea, why? He said you boys go to my barns cause them dang birds was pecking holes in the tin. We said ok, but we never got around to going. Funny thing, that subject and his barns never came up again, especially if we was in his company. LOL Eddie
