Anyone from around Anniston, Ala area

Hello everyone, I normally lurk in the Survival areas and don't post much any more..I am looking on info on the area around Anniston, Alabama .. There is a job that I have a chance of getting and I would like info about the area..Is there affordable housing,Is it self reliance friendly, etc..I have driven by it on the interstate a few times and spent a couple of days at Ft. Mcclellan before they closed it but really don't know much about the area..Any help will be greatly appreciated..This isn't going to happen in the next couple of days so I have time.......Thanks, LostnEurope

Hey,
I'm up the road from there a ways, Rome, Ga., but, currently I too am in Europe. My family is from that area, grandparents have passed, but I have cousins and uncles/aunts in that area.

There are areas you can find good places to grow just about anything you want, raise what ever animals you want and the access to other "modern" things are all available, depending on what your looking for. The Ft McClellan area and north and east of there is very pretty and can be pretty remote too if you look in the right areas.

I've spent a lot of time over the years going and coming thru there. I like the area, it all depends on what you are looking for, if you have traveled a lot, you know every place is what you make of it. I do like Alabama for the less hectic life and more freedom to do what you would like. They aren't as restrictive there as in other places (GA)...taxes are lower. If I could do things over again, I would move to the Piedmont/Centre area. Hope your endeavor is fruitful. Good Luck. PM if you want to talk more about the area.
Steve

I think there are several others on the list closer than me as I'm closer to B'ham, so they may be able to answer your questions better.

Here are two sites that give some data on the area that may help you:
http://alabama.hometownlocator.com/A...n/Anniston.cfm
http://realestate.adrhi.com/alabama-anniston.htm

There is a lot of variation in the surrounding area of Annistion, you can find from fairly flat to hilly.

If you want to avoid people near your property, you would probably want to stay away from the Chief Ladiga trail (a rails to trails type project).

Good luck,
Dawn

I have cousins living in the area. It's a rural friendly area and they really like living there.

Here's the official City of Anniston link: http://ci.anniston.al.us/

And here's the Anniston newspaper link: http://www.annistonstar.com/as-index.htm

Anniston is a bad place at all. The surrounding areas are nice too. Homes are affordable etc.

Im about two counties up and two counties west. My brother lives not far from there and he really loves it out in the country

i am in auburn. but my guard unit goes to Ft. Mac on a regular basis. by the way, Ft. McClennan is far from being closed. It was turned over to the State of Alabama and is a major Army training base. And Homeland security has a big presence there too. all the Ranges are still being used as we have several EOD units here in this state. Warrant officer training and ROTC stuff goes on there year round.

Lots of retired military still dominate the old city. getting more resturants and more business there too. gonna be a real competitor in the market place in the years to come. Housing is not bad but hurry, pricing is going up!

We are an hour east in GA, Son owns land in the area. It is somewhat rolling and timbered yet and prices still affordable. Pretty country, but a lot of Atlanta area folks are trying to get their piece of heaven there. Still not crowded and most are going for acreage not lots. Anniston schools in the city are not the best.

They are still incinerating nerve gas near Anniston last I heard, but that was due to wrap up soon. Alabama is pro-Republican, pro-gun, pro-military, pro-attack foreign countries, anti-government, fly the flags (U.S. and Confederate battle flag), anti-immigrant, anti-Yankee, leave me alone or you might get shot Scotch-Irish country. If that's you, you will fit in perfectly. The only place I can think of that may be to the right of Alabama is some areas of Texas. But that comparison is pretty much just splitting hairs.

Well, since I am a native Texan, combat vet, pro-military,anti-yankee, seriously concerned about the Goverment and prefer to be left alone type I would probably fit in...The job I have a possibility is on the depot side......I thank everyone for the replies and any others that may come.......LnE
