Good "road" eats

No road kill stories..

Surely you have small places that you stop for that great burger, chicken or milkshake. Nothing greater about diving around the country then finding good road eats.

The Old Stone truckstop in VA exit 321 I-81 has some of the best and resonably priced fried chicken I've found.
White's truckstop exit 205 I-81 in VA has great baked chicken and a whole hot case of fried foods that are incredibly cheap and good.
Ridgewood's Barbecue in Piney Flats on the Old Elizabethton Hwy. is incredibly unique and has excellent barbecue and french fries.
Best fried catfish I've ever eaten was at exit 115 I-39 Rockford IL at the big shell truckstop.

Mac and Ernies Restaurant in Tarpley Texas. Was featured on the Food Network on Guys big bite or where he goes and eats at different places. Their specialties are their Cabrito burger (people drive from all parts of the state for one of these and their chicken fried lamb chops. The lamb chops go so fast you have to call ahead and reserve a chop. Her kitchen is open to the outside on one wall and only has 3 walls enclosed. The cuisine I am told has a 4 star rating - expect to see quail on the menu quite often. Great place to eat.

Website at www.macandernies.com

If you are going to be in the area and want company for dinner then give us a PM and we will be glad to meet you.

For roadkill I much prefer 'Poodles and Noodles'.

Good "Road" Eats!

I just knew this one was about "Road Kill" and almost didn't even want to go there in fear that you were picking up "Road Kill" for supper. I really did pray before I opened this one that it was not what I thought. Thank God!!!!!!!!

A little dive on hwy 54 just outside of Wichita called the Siesta Lounge. Decor is early Budwiser, but the food is awesome! The old guy that owns it hand cuts all the steaks. They have an 8 oz club that comes iwth potatoe and salad for around $11. The steaks are well -seasoned and so tender that you can cut them with a plastic knife. (I used to pick them up on the way to work. We would reheat them in teh microwave at around 0100, and they would still cut with plastic). The mexican salad is great too, but stick with the mild or medium. The hot and extra-hot will set you free (and not in a good way)!

Love this thread!

P&H Truck Stop in Wells River, VT (Exit 17 of I-91). Got the best breakfast around. We used to stop anytime we were going through that way in the morning (which hasn't been lately).

Great breakfast at "The Hole In The Wall" on Hwy 27 between Kerrville, Tx and Ingram, Texas.

Sausage gravy Biscuits that cover the whole plate plus 3 fried eggs on top for $4.99. Each order of sausage gravy made for your order only. Great tasting food for a reasonable price. They are open Mon - Sat.

OH Yeah - they serve great hand made burgers on home made rolls for the lunch time crowd.

For you guys in NY or going thru there, I wish I could remember the name!!! We stop on our way back from the Adirondaks to the airport in Rochester. It might be near Floyd on 365. Best 'home cooking' I've ever had.

Mary's Kitchen, Geneva-on-the-Lake Ohio. It's in a little old house right on the lake, and has been open for 60 years! It's just a tiny place with a few regular kitchen tables and old chairs, but there is a real family feeling when you eat there. It's like eating at Grandma's house, only with a better view! If you get a chance to go, I highly recommend the turkey and dressing.

Bill's Catfish Restaurant
W Highway 79
Waurika, OK

It's about 10 miles from me, sitting in the middle of nowhere surrounded by mesquite brush and cattle pastures. It's always packed and people will drive 100 or 150 miles to get to it.

It says "Catfish Restaurant" because that's what they started with but they have a full range of seafood, as well as steak and chicken.

In Missouri - Highway 70 Exit 175 - Maggie's Friends Cafe. You know you can always tell how good an eating joint is by the number of trucks in the parking lot - this one is always full. Homemade pies with 4" of meringue and good home cooking. Weekend breakfast and lunch buffet. Just remember - you aren't there for the decor.

Not quite a hole in the wall, but the Iron Skillet truck stop in Durham, NC serves a big ol ribeye for 9.99 that's not to shabby. There is also a little place on 53 in upstate Wisconsin called the Wagon Wheel or something like that, I think you can still get a full breakfast for 2.99.
