Braggin Rights

We filled our propane tank about a year ago and I just went out and checked it and we still have 75%. Our furnace and stove are the only things on propane. Our wood fireplace insert is one of the best investments we've ever made. The furnace has only kicked on a few times. Now, if our health will just allow us to be able to keep cutting our own firewood.

Good for you! The more you cut your firewood the more you'll keep that health.

I rent and we have propane only...here in cold Vermont. I'm spending about 170 to 200 a month to keep the apartment reasonably warm Congratulations! Oh how I miss wood heat!

Hurray for you! That's the way to save money and to keep in the current carbon cycle, while being comfortably warm!

LP co switched to smaller tank

I hear ya! We only need lp for our kitchen stove. We use our wood insert only, if we should have to leave for more than two days in the winter, we do have a back-up lp furnace.

Our propane company called us last year to come out and REPLACE our 500 gallon tank with a 250 gallon tank, because we did not USE enough!! We had it filled then, and we are still at only 60%!!

We are also fortunate to have our own wood, which we cut and split. It is very time consuming on your weekends all spring, and early summer, and if you are a procrastinator, early fall. LOL.

Maybe you can just do your own wood a little bit at a time? Something might be better to help you save even more $$$$ in the long term.

Staying warm in the single digits in Michigan......it is winter. :baby04:

Doesn't it make you feel good to know you've saved in so many ways? Last April, we were down to 1/2 tank of oil and I never filled my tank. It's now just below 1/2 and I'm hoping to make it through to this April without filling. I only use the furnace on single digit days to help keep the edge off the cold. The rest is up to the stove, warm clothes, and lots of blankets!

Our heat pump rarely comes on (set a 60) since we got rid of the vogelzang and put in a fisher baby bear. (our house is 1400 sq ft, built in 1984 with standard insulation and double pane windows, zone 7) I think I will get through the entire winter with 1 cord of good hardwood, and power bills that average $35.
