Anyone make/use milk paint?

I've gotten interested in using real milk paint in our next house. You can buy the powder ($) or make your own. It sounds great- totally non-toxic, natural, no V.O.C.'s. The 200 y/o house I grew up in still had milk paint in places- boy, is that stuff tough! One recipe I found called for linseed oil, most don't. The only expensive ingredient is the various pigments, although if I really get into it, I can make my own dyes. I'm just wondering what the downside is? Just curious if any of you on here have any experience? If nothing else, I'll paint the barn with it!

I think there was a Mother Earth article about making paint last year--check it out.
