Where do you buy food grade diamatious earth?

I am having trouble finding where to buy it. Could you help me find a reputable source?

Froogle.com is your friend. I got some from a store there, can't remember who ATM, but try it. You can sort results by price. You can sort through them to find one closer to you if you want. Happy hunting.

I buy it from maple syrup suppliers. We use it to filter maple syrup.

I'd try another feed store. At least one that will call its vendors for you and see if they could locate it and bring it in for you as a special order.

I worked in a feed store for over five years. When I first started working there, we only brought DE in as a special order. Eventually we started routinely carrying it because the demand justified doing so.

It makes me crazy when people come here and say their feed store "can't" or "won't" special order something. We did it all the time. There was very little we couldn't locate and bring in as a courtesy to our customers. Sometimes it took a few phone calls to locate the item but rarely could we not locate something at all (it does happen, just not often).

I am sorry for the drift here, but I have seen threads on DE in the past and that leads me to two questions.

1) What is diamatirous earth?

2) Why would I care what it is?

It's fossils of microscopic creatures. It's a good bug killer because the tiny little needle-like extensions on the shells pierces bug's exoskeletons and dries them out. But macroscopically it looks and feels almost like talcum powder. You can put it on dogs and cats to kill fleas, put it on poultry to kill lice, put it on garden plants to kill bugs. I sprinkle it into 25# bags of dry beans and rice to keep them bug-free. You can also sprinkle it in your kitchen behind appliances and stuff to kill roaches.

It's completely harmless and non-toxic to any life forms except insects.

Food grade DE and bulk foods A great price, even including the outrageous shipping. Only thing better would be buying it locally. They also have fantastic supply of bulk foods at what I hear are very good prices.

True, if you're talking about food-grade DE. I wouldn't make such a broad statement on NON-foodgrade DE.

Sorry, ladycat. I meant to make a distinction more for trvlnusa than you. His/her questions in post #10 led me to believe that he/she may not know there is a difference. Many don't. To make matters worse, on previous DE threads, it seems someone will always say "try your local pool supply store". And that's just wrong, you know?

It's the only kind we buy, too.

i would like to point out for any new people using it.

1. it's spelled diatomaceous earth (in case you want to look it up)

2. You don't want to breathe too much of it in and you don't want your animals to either. don't put it all over their face. Wear a dust mask

Traci Ann,

I order mine from Morgan County Seeds (btw their catalog and their website are run by different people so prices may vary...I use the catalog). They are in Barnett, Missouri. They sell it at a good price imo-$24.00. Shipping is about $10 I think because it comes in 50#s and sent UPS. If you want their phone number I will be happy to pm it to you because I am not sure about posting company phone numbers on public board.
