For those buying a metal chimney system

I installed a Supervent chimney system that I purchased at Lowes. I'm happy with the system and installation was simple. technical support was good as I called them before buying. The chimany is made by Selkirk and sold thru Lowes stores. I have installed an American Metal Products chimney system in the past and that was an excellent system also, just no stores selling it in my area any longer. The Supervent is stainless and the AMP is galvanized, both are fine as my galvanized looks great after over 10 years. We flashed it to the metal roof with a high temp. rubber boot.

Hope this might help someone if they're considering a metal chimney. The Supervent was quite a bit cheaper then the Selkirk chimney I priced at a stove shop.

One of the best Canadian products I've ever bought. Good high quality of workmanship.

There are minor differences, but many of these chimneys are made to the same standards. I found that buying at Home Despot saved me a lot of money over buying at a stove shop. Go with the brand that's convenient and cheapest.

One thing: I was putting the chimney through a steep roof, and most of the commonly available through roof flashing kits are only good for up to a 6:12 pitch. So I built a 2' square box to surround the chimney, topped out at a 3:12 pitch.

I used a cathedral ceiling support kit $138 and 2 3' sections of insulated chimney $88.80 each. The insualted chimney had some blemishes on it when it came in so I got them for $75 ea. I didn't use Selkirks flashing but their rubber boot flashing is $125 and their metal flashing for a shingle roof is $50.

Home depot didn't carry anything and they said they couldn't get it either. I happened to see a small pad of tear off sheets for the Supervent chimney and had to order it as it was off season when I bought it. They did stock the majority of it once it got cold out.

Same price I paid two years ago (the $88.00 per sections) except I bought 6 pieces, a "through the wall kit" with the clean out and cap. It was around $650.00 for it.

Sounds expensive right? That's 200 gallons of fuel oil. Bout a month and a little more.

i considered using a chimney kit to fix my wood furnace. i was going to just run it up beside the existing chimney and strap it tight. however, with the equivilent of 3 stories worth of chimney, i think i better go with a stainless liner.

My chimney isn't very tall. Inside the one story house I have just under 6' of single wall stove pipe. The insulated chimney attaches to that at the ceiling support and then sticks through the roof. I didn't need 2 3' sections, i could have used a 3' and a 2' and had plenty of chimney above the ridge but Lowes only stocked the 3' sections of chimney and I would have had to order the 2' and since I was getting it cheaper because of a small dent I just went with the 3' and a taller chimney.
I forgot to mention my chimney is 8" as that's what my stove requires, Vermont Castings Defiant encore. 6" pipe was $61.36 per 3' section.

Is this through an already existing masonry chimney above a fireplace, or from a wood stove in an open area?

This is for a free standing wood stove on a hearth. No pre existing chimney.

If you go to the front contractors desk, Lowes will special order anything they carry nationally. Find one of the helpful employees when they arent busy.

We don't know where you are. If you go to lowes web site I'm sure you could look it all up and they will order it for you. My Lowes didn't stock any of it when I needed it and I had to special order it.

If time isn't critical, TSC marks their Simpson DuraVent systems down (Way down) in the spring. Mine served me well.

A small side note.. I purchased my single wall stovepipe from lowes also. I don't know what they paint it with but it smells terrible as it burns/cures.
