Barn Battens......

I was given an old barn to dismantle. It has several of the old "battens" between the wood siding. Most are 10' 12' long and in really good shape. Lean-tos were added to the barn several years ago (30-40), so they have been out of the weather. Anyone know if they are worth keeping?

The battens are 1 3/4" wide. The "barn board" siding is 12" I think....I'll have to measure it next time I'm over there, SHOULD be later today - if it quits snowing.....

If the battens are solid you can find lots of uses for them. If they are weathered bad you may find a crafter who would buy them. By all means try to save them.

If you need battens later, they're perfect!

On several barns I've dismantled, I keep everything that's solid, over two foot long... I can always use wood to frame windows and doors. Some of the battens are perfect, some are half rotten... some of the rottenish ones have great character, so they get stacked in the barn.

If your dismantling is like mine, everything has to be removed.... so if I'm going to all the trouble of removing it and transporting it, it might as well go into the barn stacks as to the dump.

A guy with a hand held metal detector and a decent planer or large sander could make a million projects with this material.

My uncle rehabbed an apt. building that was built in the 40's. The spruce/fir/pine under sheathing was grayed, but once sanded, made BEAUTIFUL stock.

Wish I would have bought everything he had from that project.
