rock cutting

Not sure if this is the right place for this but I will ask anyways.

My kids and I watched a show about Agates and we are going to try and collect some once it warms up around here.

Have been doing some book reading and everything points to diamond bladed saws. Anybody ever built their own saw? Anybody ever tried a diamond coated coping saw blade?

Thanks,
Jon

Hi MN Mom,
I am a huge rockhound and gem miner. I will send you the link to the plans to build your own wet saw. It's easy and cheap. MinerJohn

Just my 2 cents...............

I used my friends wet cutting tile/brick saw that uses a diamond blade, and it cut through this one rock like hot butter. You could rent one if you only want to cut a few rocks. And then buy or build on later.

That's a good two cents. Tile saws work great too. You can buy them dirt cheap from Harbor Freight.

We do a lot of rock cutting, drilling and splitting. It's pretty easy. We use a diamond blade ($17)on a standard skillsaw for cutting. Feathers and wedges or simply brick set and hammer for splitting. Hammerdrill (Makita $239) and carbide drill bits ($10 to $50 depending on diameter and length). Lots of fun. Our current big project is our tiny cottage:

I have seen tile saws in Harbor for around $50-60. If the process you are going to use allows water, do so, it is a big help when cutting stone, especially for high speed rotary applications. I am helping a friend of mine build a wire saw that will but 25 blocks of marble into slabs, is that too big?

I grew up in MN - about 30 mn north of St. Paul. Every summer we spent hours walking up and down the dirt roads collecting agates. Cousins would come out and spend a lot of time looking also.

Good place to live if you love agates!
