Does this sound like a bad compressor on the fridge?

Jenn Aire side by side fridge/freezer, 3 years old.

Symptoms. Buzzing sound and a click that lasts about 20 seconds and happens every 4 to 5 minutes. Freezer and fridge not working - food in the freezer thawed and fridge no long cooling.

Cleaned coils, didn't help. Fan running but air coming out of it just feels room temp. Compressor does not appear to be running.

Does this sound like the compressor went bad?

Can't get a hold of customer service till Monday morning if they are even open New Years Eve.

Thanks,

ANita

Anita, I have gotten good advice and help here: http://forum.doityourself.com/index.php, there is an appliance section somewhere midway. You could have an ice dam or other less expensive issues.

Sounds like a bad capacitor on the compressor. It could also be the start winding in the motor or a bad compressor. The capacitor would be a cheap fix. The others require you to check craigslist for a replacement frig.

Thanks for the web site and for the other info. We are going to go and buy a new relay/capacitor and see if that fixes the problem. If not we'll have to call for a tech to come out.

If it is the compress it is still under warranty.

buzzing is a locked up motor. The click is a thermal overload. Time for a new fridge!

Well putting in a new relay didn't fix the problem. So yep we're thinking the compressor is broke/locked up.

It is still under warranty so Jenn Aire would be responsible for a new compressor to be installed or giving us a new fridge.

No one can come out till Wednesday or Thursday and then if it is the compressor they would have to order it. So probably sometime next week before it would be fixed.

Little advice here. If I were you, I'd take the new relay/capacitor that you put on the frig off. If a service tech comes out and sees that you have been tinkering with the unit, he might possibly void the warranty and you're gonna be stuck with a hefty bill or have to buy a new frig. I worked in the industry for 35 yrs. and I've seen several times when a warranty was voided because of a homeowner trying to make their own repairs.
