The spider design indicates its of Australian manufacture and is a long sought collectors item.

Hi Y'all;
I haven't seen that either but i have the cast iron skillets my DH's grandmother gave me which had been given to her by her grandmother. Grandma passed away at age 90 in 1990, so there's no telling how old the cookware is but I won't sell it because I still use it and it is a far cry better than the new stuff and has outlasted some I bought when I first got married.

Makes me wonder if my OWN frying pans are worth something! My husbands grandmother gave them to me 25 years ago: they were a gift from HER mother!
Then again, I enjoy using good tools and if I sold it, the bought ones might not be as good!

I call our cast iron skillet a Spider but it has 3 legs! Have collected cast iron for years, now why couldn't I have that one on hand?

I have five cast iron skillets of various sizes from tiny enough to just cook one egg to about double a regular skillet. I also have a dutch oven with a handle but no spider.
Mine are all from grandmother's on each side so old but I use them every day. Love my cast iron!!

The Spider logo is one of the oldest and rarest Griswold pans. They frequently sell for huge amounts. The newest Griswolds have a small circle with cross (1 1/2") logo on the bottom and the older ones have a larger logo on them (2" -2 1/2"). The really old and high dollar skillets have the Spider or are just labeled with "Erie" at the top.

I love my cast iron, but anyone that pays over seventeen hundred dollars for a 9-inch cast iron pan has got more money than they have sense!

Thanks for the education! DH bought me a set of Griswold skillets to match the one I got from his mother. All of them have the larger cross, including my beloved stove-top waffle press I'll have to tell him to keep an eye out for the spider logo when he goes browsing at the antique shops and yardsales!

What? But wouldn't it be fun trying to find one that would out last it with $1700.00. Great Grandma Would turn over in her grave if she new I didn't sell that spider for $1700.00. Why ,I would be the talk all over heaven and I can all most here Great grandma now saying "I new that fool was crazy, but I didn't think he was that crazy"Its a good thing I won't offered $1700.00, I wouldn't have left no spider or money to nobody." Seriously, No I would not have sold it either for $1700.00 Oh, my wife is real happy that I cleaned and wire brushed every thing around here that even looked like a frying pan since this thread started.

They are called "spiders" because of the long cast iron legs that were used to keep the skillet out of the fire - as in those huge old walk in kind of hearths. I did not know that there was a brand called spider. The legs were long and thin and looked like "spiders". Most had lids.
