Anyone near Georgetown New York?
Cross posting this on CF forum as well :-)
Is anyone near this area? If so, can you offer some insight? Jobs, services available, homestead friendliness, that sort of thing? Likes, dislikes? Thank you.

Are you in Cortland county or Madison county? Looks like there are 2 georgetowns. for jobs you are probably looking at Norwich, Cortland or Binghamton although I'm no expert I just moved here in August. Services available - there is great recycling up here. I don't know what kind of services you are asking about though? Homestead friendliness - well the homesteaders up here couldn't be nicer. My immediate neighbors weren't that nice, but I've met some great people right down the road. Most people were wary of me till they got to know me a little bit. Its so beautiful up here and the major roads are cleared pretty quickly when there is snow. There are some great resale shops and feed stores here. I'm still in an adjustment period though and I've been told the honeymoon will wear off soon enough.
Are you here now or are you moving here?

I'm still in Tennessee :-)
There is a farm for sale i'm interested in located in Georgetown, NY 13334. 35 minutes away from Syracuse.
Coming from so far away, i'd like an insider's info before traveling to see a farm that might not work for us anyway. We have horses, so access to feed/vet care/farrier care would be necessary. Still undecided about homeschooling vs public school. round here a tractor driving down the road is common, would it be so there? Or would it earn you a flying bird and insults?
That sort of thing.

That's only about 35 minutes from me. Seeing a tractor going down the road is very common even on state highways, doesn't seem to bother anyone (or me either for that matter). I hope some others from my area chime in because like I said I just got here. I haven't had much luck finding a vet for my pig, most I've called don't handle them. I doubt you'd have problems finding a vet for horses, dogs or cats though. go to smartpages.com, put in the zip code and "veterinarian" and call the closest ones that come up to see if they would work for you. I've heard people say bad things about Cornell university, but their programs are one of the reasons we moved here. take a look into what their extension office can help you with and sign up for their newsletter. all kinds of free classes during the year. Be prepared to drive 30 minutes for groceries, though most small towns do have at least a convience store that will get you by in an emergency.
I like Lilley's tack and feed in Dryden and go there when getting supplies in Cortland. http://lilleystacknfeed.com/ They pretty much bend over backwards to make sure I keep in stock of miniature pig food.
I usually go to Norwich for supplies though just because I like it better and it's a hair closer to me. I still don't have the hang of where to go here for stuff, but I'm working on it. There are a lot of bulk buying coops here and farm stands too. I know there is a really good bulk produce place that everyone up here talks about, but they close down for the season on Halloween I think it is.
Good luck and hope you get the info you need.

There are 2 equine colleges right nearby, so you would likely find a good horse vet very easily. (Cazenovia and Morrisville).
Lots of farm equipment running up and down the highway, also Amish buggies.
Locals are typically slow at accepting newbies, but better than most places.
There are a lot of homesteaders here.
Good markets for sales of farm products.
Agri-tourism is very popular.
Syracuse is getting an amazing new shopping center called Destiny - and a
revitalized downtown, with a monorail going between. This is expected to draw a lot of interest back to the city and will likely impact sprawl. It may reach G-town in a few years.

thanks! I called one of the lady's that rescues abandoned pigs and got her vet list. The closest was over an hour away. I've called every vet in smartpages.com within about a 40 minute radius. So if there is one closer that would be just incredible!
