Picking up my pork today...

I'm going to pick up my pork from the butcher in a few minutes It cost me $200.50 for 2 good sized pigs, which I think is quite reasonable. The man drove 35 miles to my house, shot and bled them here, loaded them in his truck and took them to be butchered, wrapped, smoked and made into three kinds of sausage. I'm not sure how much meat I have-- all I asked was how much I owed when they called yesterday. I'll let ya know later how much meat it was. The place I used to use charges a $35 kill fee and you had to deliver them there live-- it's almost an hour away. They charged an outrageous price per pound too. I was so happy to find a person that would come kill them for me

I honestly did not keep track of how much feed I bought , but they ate a lot of apples (a few 5 gallon pails a day late summer through fall) and tons of grapevine, burdock, pumpkins, squash and whatever else I pulled out of the ground. Yes, I know time is money, but I don't do anything else besides sit here and tend to my critters and gardens...

I'm pretty sure I raised them cheaper than I could buy them, but next year I'll keep track of feed costs. I haven't before because I really don't care-- I know it's healthy meat and they were treated humanely.

Michelle, who did you use for butchering? I've had Windmill Meats in Hammond, and like them. They've got a guy who comes to the farm.

Isn't it the best feeling?! You are going to love your pork, we fed lots of apples too and the ham and the pork roast and everything are sooooo sweet and yummy. I made a huge ham for Christmas dinner, and even people who don't really like ham RAVED! Just wait 'til they have my Narrie Tom for New Year's Eve dinner!
Even if it cost the same or a bit more I will continue to raise two pigs each summer, there is just no comparison.
Our butcher is really good, but we have to bring them and there is a 40- kill fee, he is pretty well known for his smoking tho, the hams and bacons are outstanding!
The really nice thing is he needs the product we have to offer (signs and business cards) we bartered for beef with him and got a bunch of cuts like butter steaks for some business cards! Yipppeeee!

Dawson Custom Meats from between Lisbon and Canton. I've never heard of Windmill Meats, but I'll keep it in mind just in case

Have you ate any of your Narries yet?? Mine for Thanksgiving was yummy!!

I was so happy to find someone to come here and kill them-- I absolutely hate taking hogs to the butcher

I wish I had something to barter for beef... we do have a local farm that sells their beef at the store here in town and it's very, very good. Pricey, but good. I'm very seriously considering a beef cow in the spring...

Tom Dawson is great

Tom does ours as well, he is the best butcher we've used since we moved back here from out west. In a typical year Tom does 6 pigs, 4 beefers and a couple of lambs for us. Not only are we happy with Tom's work but our customers are as well and that really means alot.

I have to agree-- the pork chops we ate tonight were wonderful. It's the best cut meat I've had in years. You must be pretty close to me...??
