Are the firestarters you buy safe for your stove pipes My stove pipes look like glass inside

Do you use the creosote sticks for eliminating build up in the pipes? I've heard that those will coat the inside of the pipes. I've also heard it's not good for the pipes as it will eat away at them. I don't know if it's true, it's just what I've read.

I use cotton balls stored in a jar and pour kerosene on them enough to wet. When I start a fire I put in the kindling and wood and stuff a cotton ball in the stuff and light it. Burns long enough to get the wood going.
