Smile New to the forum

Hello everyone and Happy Hollidays!

I am new to the forums and wanted to say hi to everyone. A little about me, I live in Guam currently with Husband and children, we are here for the next 3 years. We are originally from W.Va and plan on moving back when my husband retires.I have really enjoyed reading your forums and have learned so much.

The best thing about Guam is the free bananas, papayas, coconuts, avacadoes and other wild fruits, I dont think I have bought bananas since I lived here. The worst thing is I can't tan and look like a lobster if I go outside.

Welcome, early riser! Well, I am, but you could be a night owl, since you're in Guam. You, of course, are in a slightly different time zone than where I sit north of Chicago.

What time is it there?

Pony!

Welcome to HT. Do you plan to homestead when you return to WVA?

Yes, we are currently looking for properties within 50 miles of the Clarksburg area, around 5-10 acres. I do not get to do much here in Guam atm, but I do grow herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers. I also occasionally feed the herd of homeless chickens that roam around:baby04:

G'Day!
Hope you're prepared to put an hour, or two, aside each day to read all the info that will be made available to you from the folk here.
Do you have any particular interests or hobbies that you'd like to be involved in? You might be surprised to learn that you probably know more than you think you do at the moment, and will also want to become a contributer by and by.

do bananas grow from a seed in the banana or the whole thing? are they really green there? can you try and grow one yourself? same question for the papayas. how long till they reach fruit bairing years? this is so neat! I want to here of all the stories you can tell. I love hearing about other countries and what the people are like. what's a fav. food their? got any local resipes to share? lol. I hope you enjoy being here with all us nutty homesteaders and hope you can teach us a thing or two.

I have lived here since 2005, not really sure about growing the bananas they just grow out in the back and I go cut a bunch as I find them ripened. These are not full sized bananas, they are about half the size I was used to getting back on the mainland. However the are very yummy!

The papayas grow very fast, but again I havent tried to grow one so I am not really sure One of the local things though involving the papaya is to cut it while green, thinly slice it and pickle it in vinegar and hot peppers. It is actually very good. It is also used as a local remedy to cure all kinds of skin problems including ringworm.

Some of the local dishes that are popular :red rice, chicken keleguen, anything with spam, theres a ton just using coconut and I would be happy to send you any recipes I come across.

I had a talk with my neighbor who has lived here her whole life and she actually took me for a walk and showed me other stuff, sugar cane, taipioca, and about 6 other fruits that I cant for the life of me remember the name of atm.

how neat! I would LOVE to be able to grow my own sugercane, but with temps dipping down to single digets in the winter, I'm not seeing that happening.
