5 year old kills bear

Have you seen this? This 5 year old boy killed a 400+ pound bear. Apparently he got 3 deer this year, too!

I just saw this on the news. The boys grandfather said Davy Crockett was his great grandfather.

This was brought up on another board I'm on. That board is comprised primarily of women...urban women...women who don't hunt, who don't come from a rural background, etc.

On that board, many many were appalled that 1. a 5 year old was shooting a gun; 2. that he was hunting 3. That his parents were allowing him to be around "dangerous" weapons, etc, etc, etc.

I just bring this up, because the tone there was so different than the tone here. Just really emphasized to me the differences between "country" values and "urban" values.

Try reading the autobiography of Davy Crockett. Entertaining, hillarious, fanastic, etc. It doesn't as I recall say anything age 3. Does say bear was his favorite meat. I checked it out of the library, old falling apart. Part of Americana past. I was in the process of reading biographies of famous people. More of Davy's stuck thru the years than any body else's.

I'll probably get flamed for saying this here....but I thought it was kind of awful.

To be fair, I didn't finish the video. Was it a nuisance animal or something....or just a trophy? I think teaching kids that its ok to kill something just to have a trophy is terrible.

I can really appreciate teaching your kids to shoot, how to skin an animal and be responsible with natural resources and put meat on your table....but killing something just for sport rubs me the wrong way. Why would you want to destroy one of God's beautiful creatures just so you can mount it on your wall or brag about it? I'd rather watch it and appreciate it in it's natural environment.

Just my $.02

Well, that kid will have a story to tell his grandkids!

I applaud this family.

I grew up with hunting men and I don't think there's anything better for a young man's character. I can see that the Granpa and Dad are very careful with the boy--teaching him responsible hunting.

About the women's site:

My DH says that single-parent (women) are making sissies out of their boys. I tend to agree with him.

The bears our family shot were used for meat, and especially the lard--"bear grease". You never tasted a better pie than one made with bear grease.

And yea, there's the trophy! So what!

Get a clue--look at the prisons, busting at the seams with young men looking for "power".

The boy is not rampantly slaughtering helpless animals--he shot a bear.

they are eating the meat, so not a trophy hunt.

crobar, it's in the song:

Born on a mountain top in Tennesse
Greenest state in the land of the free
Raised in the woods so he knew every tree
kilt him a b'ar when he was only three

Davy Davy Crockett
King of the wild frontier

I can't remember the rest of it right now. I'm sure a Google search would find it.

Obviously you haven't watched the Disney movies. You know if you saw it on tv it must be true.

I hope you don't mind me having a bit of fun. I personally doubt any 3 year old could kill a bear, and surely not by grinning it to death. From what historical writings I have read, Davey Crockett was a trickster and a master at spinning yarns.

Here's a link to the song:

Like I said Wildwood Flower...if you're gonna use the animal for some purpose, that's one thing....I have no problem with that. I have a problem with killing animals for sport/trophies. Maybe you misunderstood my intent....or maybe you didn't, I don't know, but killing something you have no use for other than to brag about it is asinine in my not-so-humble opinion.

For one thing, Arkansas is said to only have about 2500 wild black bears:

http://www.bear.org/Black/Black_Bear_Populations.html

So, what? This kid's folks want him to have the notable, highly admired honor of being the man who killed one of the last ones?

Another thing, black bears except when caged and fed, rarely get anywhere near that large. Caging and feeding makes them real easy to shoot.

People outnumber bears 1120/1 in Arkansas. Maybe there should be more room for and less prosecution of bears there.
