Question Gingerbread house for the critters?

Had no idea where to put this thread......

Is it okay to set a gingerbread house outside for the rodents and birds, etc. to eat over the winter? Is the sugar and fat an extra boost to get them throught the winter happily or is it really bad for them?

This particular house is made of gingerbread, royal icing, powdered sugar, York peppermints, rollos chocolate, and jelly beans. Not sure if that makes a difference.

It just seems such a waste to throw it out. We dont want to eat it because I made it back in August for the county fair. *ew* But I figured the critters wouldnt mind the age and staleness......

Thanks

Can't hurt, can it? I say just move it away from your house and feeding areas (if you have livestock).... At worse, the weather will eventually return it to the earth...

I can hear them now. Yoggy saying Aye Aye Boo Boo. Mother Homsteader left us a Christmas Pic-A-Nic Goody. And now we know why!

Sounds delightful I'm sure they'll be happy although I'm not sure chocolate is good for birds. Maybe you could just take the rollo's off?

I know I can't feed my parrot chocolate (dogs neither).

Every year we have a big ginger bread house decorating party for all the aunts/uncles/cousins, neices, nephews .... by the end of the day we have 25 houses laying around. Most everyone takes them home, but we are still "stuck" with 6 or 8. We put them outside one at a time until gone. The red squirrels, especially, love them!!!! There is nothing cuter than a squirrel sitting on top of the ginger bread house munching on a candy cane.

I would! The birds will love the "cracker" part and the coons will love the sweets.

I used to make one for the dogs with a recipe for dog busciuts and a dog-safe frosting. They were cute. Could always make one with crackers, lard and birdseed to.
