Ferral Hogs
On our way back home this afternoon we stopped by the Canney Mountian Campground out by Gainesville,Mo. There were park rangers that had a sow they had trapped hanging up. We had a talk with them.
It seems that these types of hogs are very plentiful in the Ozarks, The ranger said this was the 3rd one in the traps today they donate the meat to feed the poor.
He said that the woods in this area had about 3,000 of these hogs, they came up north now, he said they were mean, paula

They have come about as far east as they can go, too. Last couple years the corn farmers have had a problem around here with them rooting up their corn. I know one farmer said he had killed seventeen in one field during the spring. They would root it up fast as he could plant it. Paula recon would them wolves prey on them hogs..

Had a guy near Bay City,MI with a plan to raise some on a scrub piece he had fenced. Going to sell to the hunt club bunch. All 250 got out. Within a month they covered two counties. Breed like crazy. DNR issued a shoot on sight request. State is rethinking alowing these wild boars to be bred in Michigan. Two years later they are still a problem.

Mo. Dept. of Conservation says if you see a feral hog, shoot it. Have heard that some folks have seen guys driving around down the Ozarks pulling a stock trailer. Every so often they'd kick out a hog. It's all about the hunting, for those folks. They don't care if the hogs do any damage or get out of control, just so long as they get the thrill of the hunt.
Place we bought is a little west of Twin Bridges, on 14. i asked around about wild hogs. So far, knocking on wood, they've not gotten that far. Yet. Would be interesting to see a map of where the hogs are and how they are spreading.

I just saw something about Feral Hogs on the Wisconsin DNR website, they are asking for hunters to come to the part of the state (pretty far south of me) where they are being found and hunt them.

I'm originally from Crawford county WI. My nephews shoot several wild hogs every year. Go to www.haneyvalley.com. It's an outfitter in the area and used to have pictures of some of the hogs that were taken during deer season. Last year my brother took the first one ever in the county with a bow. Lots of them hit by other hunters but never recovered. Tough animal and a small kill area. He used a 70# compond and heavy arrow and got 6-7" of penetration. Hog went 200 yds. and dropped dead. The hogs showed up about 6-7 years ago and are now a nuisance.

I'm sure if you check there is Hogs within easy driving distance of you.I know someone dumpped a Trailer Load here. They didn't last long because they weren't wild enough. They went to people houses looking for feed.
Truth they will be a Big problem in a few years. But on the other hand give us something more to hunt.

BRP and Paula,
SHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! They might hear you! LOL!!! Fully expect them to eventually make their way over to us. Actually, the real estate agent i asked, said he'd heard about maybe 3 in all the time he'd lived around there. The neighbors haven't seen any sign in our area yet, so i'm hoping it will be at least a few years. When i last lived down there [Neosho, '81], there weren't any armadillo's or many black bear, either. But now.........
BRP, i'm interested in what they taste like. Have read the "oldtimers" say there's nothing like hog finished out on mast. Think i'd rather try that with domestic hog though.
Paula, yep, we're close. It has surprised me how many folks on this board are kinda clustered up in that general area. But it's easy to understand why.

Growing up in Texas, we had lots of wild hogs. Here in northern Illinois I haven't seen any, but there's not a lot of open range for them to roam on. They like forest, not cornfield.
They can tear up property pretty fast, but I don't find them to be a problem until I've filled up my freezer.
In Texas they weren't shy. Many a time I had to choose between climbing a Mesquite tree or facing the hog. That's a tough choice, if you've ever seen a Mesquite tree. They can come up on out of brush pretty fast too, way faster than you can take a sling rifle off your shoulder.

Makes one take a new view on who is hunting who. They trash fences with great regularity. They will however respect a strong electric wire about 6 inches from the ground. I guess if you were to get 40,000 volts in your wet snout you might gain a measure of respect.

I moved from Texas to KS. They have them here too. Used to be 10 years ago only 4 counties had feral hogs..now it's 20 counties. The state is trying to get the people to quit hauling them around and releasing them since KS is such a huge farming state that they stand to lose $$ then they made a stupid regulation that you have to send in handwritten permission from the landowner then pay a fee for a hog hunting license then hunt only on that LAND! I spoke with the state agent in charge and he said it's due to landowners' extreme paranoia about land privacy. Said laws change every year. Hunting them with dogs is allowed. A lot of illegal hog hunting going on in KS.

Our feral pigs are all black and hairy not as friendly looking as your fellow. Is that a typical feral pig from your area or a hybrid between domestic and feral? Sometimes we get pigs which have sort of reddish hair and a few have brown spots on black, but most of them are just black and hairy. We generally get them pretty small, too, they will clean out to about forty to sixty pounds of pork.
Around here, a "true" pig hunter goes out with dogs, tracks and corners the pig and then kills it with a knife. Pig hunting is a favorite sport with younger folk who after traipsing all over to get the pig, then clean it and haul it back to their truck to take it home. I, myself, am a whuss and trap the things and then shoot them with a .22. Even trapped in a cage they would still like to get out and bite me and they have big mouths and large teeth with tusks to gore. Those tusks are backed up by strong neck muscles to thrust up and tear. Even with the cage between me and the pig, I'm still really conscious of which way I'd run like heck if the thing got out.
For folks who don't want pigs in their pastures, they put in "hog wire" fencing the sort that has smaller holes near the bottom of the wire AND run two lines of barb wire at the bottom of the fence near the ground. Our friends on Oahu (the island with Honolulu, Waikiki and Pearl Harbor) have had pigs digging up their yard so the pig population is getting big even on Oahu.
