Oh... Chute.

About a week ago we had torrential rains. This about flooded the pigs out. They were up to their knees in slop. Well, the cold was coming so we wanted to get them moved. Moved the first batch by donning boots (losing said boots a time or two to the incredible suction of mud) and going in after them. Nope. Not doing that again. The pen was about 80 feet away from the barn with a drive between it.

Sloppy Pig Pen.

So we built a chute... a couple of combo panels, and lots of old corrugated tin the neighbor gave me a couple of summers ago.

It was a thing of beauty to see them start to come out... and into the barn.

Gate out of the pen.

The last pig (we call him Knot head because he has a big knot on his head, has since we got him)... wouldn't come out. We left the chute up, went in for dinner got warm, came out later, and he was still in the slop by himself. He would NOT come out and I was NOT going in after him. So we got out some old fireworks... to scare him out. Guess what, half of them were duds and the other half, well, I think he enjoyed them. So then we got long sticks and kept poking and prodding and yelling. We probably sounded like Arabic Women celebrating a marriage, or a bunch of hicks fully rounded up on 'shine. Eventually he tired of us and finally moved on out and into the barn.

Don't throw out that old tin... it's got a thousand and one uses.

ZYG,

I've been meaning to take the old barn roof panels to the salvage yard and get a few $$. Thank you for giving me a good excuse to keep them. Boy is DW going to be ----ed at you <G>.

Old tin roof panels are a thing of joy. We use them for all sorts of things. Lately we've been lining the hog wire fencing with them to keep the small dog and the new chickens from going through the fence.

Do you think Knothead would have followed a bucket of hot mash into the barn?

Not sure about hot mash, but he wouldn't follow a bucket of feed... We tried that.

I was seriously contemplating shooting him and pulling him out and butchering him because I was afraid he would freeze in there.

Winter, spring, summer, fall and mud. Great work there. I also like to burn old boards on the roofing. When the ashes are cold, I roll the panel up and pour the nails in something like a paper feed sack for disposal.

Ya done good! And now, I hope you're snugged by the woodstove with a nice, hot cup of coffee liberally laced with Bailey's or your choice of spirits.

Here is a little advice... don't leave that tin near any animals. That cost me a $600 emergency vet bill Monday night putting 8 stitches in the horse's ankle...

No alcohol, but plenty of coffee... Thank God above.
