Talking Sometimes neighbors aren't so bad...

I've given my neighbor permission to hunt my land as long as he calls first so that we know he's out there. Just for safety's sake.

Today he called and offered me two pheasants! He saw 6 and took 2 (the limit.) He didn't realize what time it was. He had to go to work and didn't have time to clean them and asked if I wanted them... Well, yeah

So I skinned them (I don't pluck ), gutted them, and packaged them. Then I took one of them back to him.

Neighbors can be great!

my dad

has always been a stickler about letting people hunt on his land. He always thought it was mean not to let them. He has people that come to his 700 acres in MO from Co, Nv and NM every year to hunt. They always give him a ham and a 50 lb bag of popcorn - even if they don't make it that year. They respected his fences his land as well as him - they always call before they come. He tells him where his cattle are and there has never been a problem.

I'm glad you have a wonderful neighbor, enjoy the pheasant.

I have the best of neighbors as well. Even when we JUST moved here he was giving us venison and bear. Last week he took a doe (deer) just 'cause he knew we'd eat it and dh hasn't had much luck in the hunting dept. He called me up just after he hit her and asked if I wanted some more meat...uh YEA. He brought her home and dh and ds went out and finished cleaning her up.

He does this often. The boys (dh and dn (neighbor)) are always working up plans on how to make things work out back for each other. We share our land and he shares his. Not sure what we ever did to be blessed with such a wonderful neighbor, but I'm sure not gonna complain.

My policy on letting people hunt or fish on our farm is, If I know them, and they are good enough to ask, I tell them it's ok if they let me know when they are going and not bring anyone else with them that I haven't given permission.
Doing this also helps keep people out who never ask.

It sounds like maybe the old code of ethics isn't dead after all.

Good for you. I like to see that happen as that was the way I was raised. I've never hunted on someone's land that I didn't offer part of the harvest. Most times I'll clean/dress and package the game and then swing by and offer them some. If their freezer is full (rarely if ever) and they don't need the meat there is always that "widow woman" down the road.....Wife laughs that it wouldn't matter what the bag limit is because I'll never have our freezer filled as I'll fill everyone elses who can't first LOL

Our neighbor came down the other day to introduce his new significant other and gave us 2 big fresh turkey breasts. He owns the turkey farm up the hill from us and after they load out turkeys a few usually fall off the conveyor so he butchers them and occassionally brings them down! Neighbors like this are great. He is the same guy that a few days after us moving in 3 years ago came down and brush hogged our property as he knew we didn't have a tractor yet and it had gone 2 summers without being done...great guy!
