I think it's a good idea, as well as American made product one.

One of our favorite sections in another publication we get is the good and not so good reviews on products out there, as well as what people have created/invented to make things easier for them.

I was wondering when someone would comment on the new "stickies." I've been a member of this forum since the beginning. There are several "generic" questions that seem to be asked every few weeks (guns, woodstoves, cast iron, chainsaws. etc.). In the various threads on these topics, there has been a lot of real good information shared. After a while, this information is "lost" due to inactivity of the thread. So, I thought I'd combine the current and all future posts on these topics into one thread. That way, people with these questions can easily check out past responses. It's kinda like "one stop shopping."

I don't know about one thread. That could be a lot of info to search through.

I don't know the best way but off the top of my head I think (if it could be done) you should have categories and maybe sub-categories. Say one category for household items (stoves, heaters, vacuums), one for outdoors items (mowers, tents, firearms) another for farm supplies/equipment (tractors, hay rakes) and one for vehicles.

That way if someone was looking to see what's the best bush hog out there they wouldn't have to wade through washing machines and pickups.

I think its a really good idea, but I'm just not sure how you would categorize it. I just purchased a pump from Northern Tool, but I was torn as to which one I really needed. (Mind you, they have about 16 pages of pumps!) It would have been nice to see what folks have purchased in the past, but with so many products I'm not sure how you would classify everything.

Good thinking though!

That would go in the "Ask Agmantoo" category...

That's a very good ideal. Sometimes you get very tired of seeing the same question come up every few days. You say to yourself "well here we go again, my guns better then yours".

I'm sure the new members wasn't here just a few days ago when we discussed it, so it would be good that they (and us) could browse the stickies first.

Tree of Knowledge section

On the keeping a family Cow forum they have a section they call the "Tree of knowledge". Basically any thread that contains a particularly good bit of information is copied there. For example, the several threads on wood stoves could be combined into one "panultimate" information thread and saved there.

Just a thought. It seems to work well there.

What I was thinking about is an forum under Homesteading titled something like Product/Equipment Recommendations/Q&A. Under it would be a bunch of stickies which each one devoted to a particular piece of equipment (e.g., chainsaws, wood ranges, pickup, wood/corn heating, firearms, etc. plus perhaps one on miscellaneous and another on best/worst buys).

I hate to see the forum be too subdivided. That happened with Backwoods Home and it's all but dead over there. So often I get information that I didn't know I need and wasn't looking for, but stumbled over it while looking for other things. That doesn't happen if there are too many subdivisions.

The forum is split up too many ways now. I hardly look at more than a section or two when I come on.

I agree that subdividing the forum too much is not a good thing. I'd love to peruse all the forums and sub-forums we have now, but just don't have the time, so I miss a lot, I'm sure. More forums = less traffic in every forum = fewer answers/less info. The sticky thing (like an in-your-face FAQ area) is better, IMO. And maybe renew the stickies periodically, because products and opinions change over time.
