I have the Avalon that takes the 16"log and LOVE it. My house is just over 1,000 sq ft, and it'll cook me out the door if I let it. I'm in upstate NY so our temps should be simmilar. Cast is more brittle, but more durable. If you start up the fire too quick too hot the casting could crack. Plate steel is much more forgiving. That being said, plate is more likley to sag if kept at a prolonged high heat. Plate is less likley to develope air leaks through heatings/time due to welding, not fitting pieces together with gaskets. Kids can wack the plate stove while fooling around and not break the stove. Cast can crack/break. Overall, I think cast is better looking/more ornate, but the plate stove fits better for the real world. The Avalon is a great stove. Been running it for sole heat source for 3 yrs now I think. Great airwash system, and can idle down to keep a butn over 8 hours on cherry and still throw plenty of heat. Mike
