Sick puppy...I need advice ASAP!

Long story short...last night Tom (four-year-old) threw up all his food. Kept licking at the air, his bed, etc. Drank quite a bit of water. Today he threw up a bunch of GAUZE!!! He'd gotten into the bathroom waste basket and ate a wad of the medicated soapy gauze we cleaned Brawn's yeast infection with.

NOW...the five-month-old puppy, Brenna, has thrown up twice. Both times it was just a small amount of very dark colored bile. She is not feeling well...hot nose, listless, refuses to eat (usually she's knocking everyone down to get to her food). Just now she was not able to jump up into my recliner (her favorite nap spot).

I want to take her to the ER vet immediately. Hubby says wait and watch her.

I'm afraid she may have swallowed some of the gauze and now has a bowel or stomach obstruction.

ADVICE PLEASE!

it could mean surgery if there is an obstruction. the younger the better. my sister works for a vet and has seen EVERYTHING obstructing a dog's digestive tract. the last tale concerned a thong...no, not the ones for your feet.

i would say wait the night as they probably will not do much for the pup tonight anyhow. i can see a vet being on call, but i doubt emergency surgery will take place. i bet the dog is reacting to the medication on the gauze as much as the gauze itself. obstructions are deadly though, so i would take the pup to the vet asap this morning.

Well, she just went out and peed, but still has no appetite. Hubby just placed two treats on next to her and she won't touch them. We're really not sure if she got into the gauze or not. The amount Tom threw up looked to be the entire amount that was in the trash.

She's had all her shots. We'll be at the vet's in the morning. Thanks everyone.

It was a question because it was the middle of the night, she didn't seem to be in distress, and the ER vet is 30 miles away...and expensive.

She seems to be fine this morning. I think she just had a tummy ache last night...and because of the incident with Tom I panicked. We kept her in the house with us and she didn't get sick again...slept all night...and ate her treats this morning.

I would make sure she's having bowel movements. A tablespoon (50 pound dog) of mineral oil makes a good laxative but I don't know if that's recommended for a dog that might be plugged.

Good luck!

Hey.

You have to examine the dog's stool to see if it passes any gauze.

There is also the possibility that the pup is slightly poisoned by the medicated soap.

Also, there may be a risk the pup may be infected from the yeast infection on the gauze. This would require antibiotics.
