A good article for homesteaders and future homesteaders

Hillsidedigger posted this in GC. I thought it would be a good read over here.

One of the best lines is how the only thing cheaper in the country is taxes. How true and how fast that changes as more move to the country.

That is a fine article, I am going to the library to look at the information. If we have warning of the possible pitfalls, we can start out better and thrive more easily than our predecessors. Still, its never easy. Thanks for bringing the article to us.

BTDT.

This article is spot on. In the late 70's My first wife and I bought 20 acres in the No. East Washington mountains and took off.
It is hard work and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Our biggest problem was choosing an area with absolutely no economy. Commerce was nearly non-existent. We eventually had to come down out of the hills due to lack of funds and any real means of making real money.
We learned a lot and had some fun, but give me running water and inside plumbing any day....

Great article. The info about communes is spot on. I don't know of anything more difficult than starting an IC from scratch, and most of the successful ones I've seen still exist due to strong financial connection to the outside world.

I think it's important to enjoy the things that you woud need to do on a homestead before you have to. I like making ketchup, even if it's messy, takes a long time, and isn't cost effective. Of course, I don't have to make ketchup just yet. and I'm guessing that once we start full time homesteading, other things will get prioritized first. Taking the opportunity to do the things you dream about doing on your own farm before you commit to buying land and moving there is critical. Know what you're getting into before you take the plunge. But then, that would be smart to do before engaging in any major decision.
