washing machine walks

We have a maytag neptune washer/ dryer. Sometimes the washer walks anywhere from an inch to about two feet. We have the rubber legs on them but they do no good. I was thinking about putting a rubber mat under them but I'm not sure if that would be okay. Any suggestions?

Is it level ? sounds to me like that is the problem. If it is not level while it spins things will be off center and make things jump around.

We used to have a walking washer, our problem was precisely what Micahn suggested. Once we leveled the machine and made sure all 4 legs were firmly in contact with the floor, the washer gave up its wandering ways.

My parents had a washer that walked. I took a piece of plywood and put a 1" wide strip of 1/2" plywood around the perimeter. Then I screwed the plywood to the floor. The washer never moved after that.

In their case I think the floor was springy.

I hope you keep it on a leash.
Be terrible if the washer ran off into the street to get hit. Or if the washer control came by and took it to the washer pound.

Level it and next time you are at the store just buy a torpedo level with a magnetic side and stick it to the washer they will come out of level if even move the slightest bit all it takes some times is to over load it wich makes it shake then it is moved an off so it moves even with a regular load.

or check it 4 times a year or any time shaking gets bad.

pros : uses less water ,less soap , less electricity , gets coths cleaner ,gets more soap rinced out, rings more water out shortening dry time saving more energy nat gas in my case, easier on cloths so they last longer , doesn't eat socks and the dryer is actualy done before the washer.

cons:high inital price , requires leveling on ocation, in the heat of summer if cloths are left in the washer they get a mildew stink in a mater of an hour or 2 (bleaching it evry 4 or 5 loads helps this greatly i do it with the towles and socks/uw) parts are expensive,

= definitly worth it it paid for itself in water and electricity saving alone over 2 years not to metion soap i use a quarter cup of deturgent so over using a cup a 120 load box gets me 480 loads or about 6 moths 2 loads a day mon thru fri 4 loads a day on sat sun family of 5
droped my water and electric bill 30 dollars a month (yes water electric and sewer where on the same bill at my old house) i have the frigidare it is the lowest priced front loader i could find.

my washer used to wander the porch. the floor is not perfectly level (the house was built in the 20's and was moved about over a couple hundred yards in the 30's or 40's) i leveled the front and used the self leveling feet on the back by tipping the washer to the front a bit and lowering it gently so that the feet find the new levels.

it hasnt walked since except when i had to move the washer and had to do it all again

My DH has leveled it 3-4 times. It walks no matter what size load it has. It doesn't walk all the time. 2-3 times a month out of 8-10 times I do laundry a month.

fishhead- My DH thinks that is the problem with our floor also. He wants to go under the house and reinforce the floor, he has a bad back which doesn't keep him from doing anything, but if I can find a way to save him the hassel of crawling under the house then great!

coonxpress- Then it'll be out there with the puppy!

wayneR- When we moved into our new house my DH bought them for me as one of the compensations of him buying a .50bmg, which we are now shooting in matches as a team.

Thanks for the help, I will pass it on to my DH as he is the contractor and won't let me touch anything.

Aha! I bet your load of laundry is out of balance. Meaning that somehow, the load gets lopsided weight-wise, like when the towels migrate to one side of the load. Jeans do this to me, too. It only takes one towel or pair of jeans too many on one side of the load to cause this. When I hear the machine start making a bunch of racket on spin cycle, I know I have to go adjust the load. Hope this helps.

A friend bought a new GE washer that walked. He leveled it and finally called the repair guy. He checked the level and everything else and said it was okay. My friend finally bolted to to the floor. It quit walking, but it shakes the whole house. I think they are made too light and flimsy nowadays to run quiet and not vibrate.
