winter grazing

Well, got the wheat/barley/Triticale/clover mix spread right before dark. First thing in the morning I'll have to get it covered. I wish I had a better way, but all I have is a lawn spreader to pull behind my little tractor, and a large sweep on my middle buster. I think I am going to rig some sort of harrow out of a cattle panel tomorrow to cover it.

The other half of the paddock I will put in ryegrass/clover, and just track over it with the tractor to get good soil contact. I wish I had a small cultipacker or even a lawn roller, but I am broke.

A piece of plywood with ropes tied to the two front corners and a few blocks or other weighty objects on top pulled behind the tractor ought to pass for a cultipacker I'm thinking. It's what I'm going to do. Not quite as good as the purpose built rig, but if the ground was a little rough when you sowed it I'm thinking this ought to smooth it out and compact it a bit to get the seed into good soil contact.

A piece of chain link fence makes a nice drag that will not clog or drag up piles of trash grass and weeds

I used to use a 10 ft piece of telephone pole with some eyebolts and a couple of chains to attach it to the tractor before I made a blade attachment for the back of my disk harrow
