Crop Damaged by ATVs

I'll probably never find out who did it, but blame Duke Power's negligence in leaving my gate opened after they did some work on a drain pipe of theirs running across our property. They were supposed to close it, they did not, then this happened.

At the rate corn is selling for, this is a felony property destruction.

As for the idiots that did this, maybe they will come back and you can catch them. Grrr.....

Duke won't do anything. They did not commit the crime. We are so far under the radar that Duke looks like the moon to us, and we are the largest single piece property owner with the oldest farm in the area.

Edit: The picture were taken by a friend of mine who dabbles in remote control helicopters and is a wedding photographer. I thought that was neat...the one positive or interesting thing to come out of this who thing.

No one should be able to buy them or snowmobiles unless you can show that you own enough land to run them on your own property. I hate those things with a passion because of all of the running they do on my fields.

I was thinking that they might be crop circles made by aliens, but I'm guessing that the ATV riders were probably America-born.

You could always call it a corn maze and charge folks a few bucks to walk through it.

I'm sorry that those irresponsible "children" wrecked your crop.

Aliens
It's a crop circle.

Hopefully an ear of corn poked their eye out.

I ashamed to say it but My brothers spoiled rotton daughter was recently charged for damaging a farmers corn crop with her Blazer (that dad bought her )
I personally hope the judge rakes her over the coals . I also hope my brother makes her pay for the damage rather than simply paying it and telling her bad girl yet again. Of course shes not talking to him right now because he had her boyfriend put in jail .

That must have been done by the one "bad apple" we always hear about whenever talk turns to regulating these nuisance machines. He sure gets around. He was in MN just last weekend.

There is absolutely no excuse for this type of behavior. I hope you catch them and they are prosecuted.

Wouldn't matter, because they'd still let their kids "play" with them unsupervised

Sorry about your crop damage. Unless you catch the little darlings at it, I'm afraid you're stuck -- no proof and no witnesses. Do you have any idea who it was?

Why do people buy those things if they don't have a place to ride them?

Idiots like that used to break my horse fence all the time. We were always getting calls that my horse was out...luckily she never caused an accident.

In PA, they started requiring license plates, registration and insurance on 4 wheelers, but I don't think it stops anyone from running without those things. Too many back roads and illegal trails.

Another reason why I think they should outlaw those things. Just too many unresponsible people ride those things along with wave runners. Sure they come in handy on the farm, so maybe they should make it that only farmers and ranchers can buy the things and pay a yearly permit on them. Maybe this will help eliminate the B---holes who ride them.

I'm sorry to hear that

Why people feel like riding through corn would be fun is beyond me.

A couple of years ago a family near where I live would continually let their daughter ride her 4 wheeler all over the country, including roadways. One evening she decided to take the neighbor's two daughters on a ride with her. She came out of the woods and attempted to cross a highway without looking and all three were killed when a car could not stop in time.
The parents tried to sue the driver for not yielding the right of way to their daughter on her 4 wheeler.

I wouldn't assume it's kids because I've seen plenty of so-called adults ripping up the landscape.

In MN the ATV assoc. has successfully fought plates large enough to read and every other measure to regulate ATVs.

The annual cost of injuries to just the ATV riders under 17 is more than $1.5 Billion.

You don't 'know' who did it? I make it a point to know all of the low class individuals, ne'er do wells, and general outlaws (plus the scum of the earth...ATV owners) in my local area... If you don't know all of the local atv scum, make it a point to learn.

I take it the damage in question is far away from your residence? Could you possibly hear atv's there from your home? Anytime I hear an atv, I go outside and 'course it'... if it's potentially on my place, I get out and confront em. Of course, I only have to confront em once.

Sorry for your loss...

I'd cut Duke's locks off, put on some new locks, preferably in one of the 'lock boxes' that are hard to get bolt cutters into... and paint a sign telling Duke employees they need to contact you first before entering property.

We have two ATVs and use them all the time. I haul stuff to the beehives, lug straw bales to the garden, go check the fruit trees, go get the mail.... they save me a ton of time and energy. We used one with a winch to pull down part of on old chicken house. They're great tools.

I cannot fathom what would possess somebody to ride one through a corn field though! That is something I just cannot get my brain around.

I don't see how license plates would fix a problem like this at all. This is more like arson. Destruction for thrills and giggles.

ssems to me that a few strategically placed large concrete blocks within the corn might help detain the people long enough the next time to catch them?

Of course, then you'll be prosecuted for "booby traps"
