New here and located in Fla

Hello all,
My name is Amber and my family and I live in SW Florida. My DH and I have been discussing getting back to basics and raising our own food, ect.
I have some farm experience along with tons of animal experience (horse nut & trainer/breeder) and DH has the muscle and seams receptive to the idea of 'homesteading naturally'.

We have a daughter (will be 3 in November) and she absolutely loves horses and animals in general. Her 'job' is feeding the pig and one of the dogs as well as supervising Mommy and riding anything that stands still long enough for her to get on it. LOL

We currently have a hog (wild caught as a piglet) that is fixing to go to the butcher. We have deer in the freezer and are working on getting a steer to put in the pen.

We are also making plans to put in a garden (aproximately 40 x 100) and plant a few rows of vegatables. Still discussing what to actually plant.

We have had Rhode Island Red chickens in the past, but when the hurricanes blew through here the wild life decided to visit the free buffet at my house. My chickens were free range so had no where to go to be safe. Needless to say, we are planning a chicken coop to lock them up at night in. I really miss those eggs.

Looking forward to meeting others of like mind and making some new friends.

Welcome to HT. It sounds like you are already doing a lot of basics in terms of supplying some of your own food. If you need help, there are plenty in the southern part who would have good ideas for you.

Hi! Half the time I'm in S Central FL and the other half in Palm Beach County. A couple of years back Granfatherbear and I spent money only for SHARE food and vegetable seeds. We didn't have any 40 by 100 garden either- goodness I'm envious! But that was when he was underemployed...
Welcome to the forum. There are actually more Floridians on the boards than just those of us who have posted...

LOL Well the garden hasn't happend yet, unless you want to count the grass that is currently there. LOL

We will have to get the ground prep done first and fence the remaining two sides (butts up to my critter proof pasture fence) to keep the wild hogs out.

I have a pile of composting manure from my stalls that will get tilled into the ground once we get the grass and rocks removed from the location.

Sometimes progress is sooooo slow

Welcome to Florida....I'm over by the Space Center. My great-great grandfather was born in Escambia County before Florida was a state, so i'm rather fond of the place :baby04:
