Guess I'd better say hello (BEFORE I pepper you with questions!)

Hi everyone!

I'm Fletcher and I'm married to a wonderful, Mr. Steady, named Joel. We have 3 great kids (11, 8, 4 1/2) and 3 cats (2 in, 1 out). We live on 5 acres conveniently located outside Columbus, OH. We decided to turn our little place into a hobby farm after deciding that our children have too much privilege and not enough responsibility. Our oldest isn't crazy about the farm "smell", but we've promised her sheep and a llama, so she's come around some. Our middle daughter can't wait to "live on a farm"; she's the current horse crazy girl. Our son can't wait to have a cow.

I grew up in the country (not on a farm, just with a big garden) and hated it, but a few years in a city apartment changed my mind. I love being in the country. DH grew up in the city, but both of his parents were from large farm families and they owned property in the country where they grew zucchini and cucumbers for farm market. He's very self-reliant and hates to pay for anything he can do himself.

We homeschool our kids and ride 4-wheelers. We've had a small garden that we have expanded every year. Next year we're moving the location and giving up the old garden spot for pasture. Our farm will eventually include, dexter cows, katahdin sheep, chickens (Orps, Wyandottes and maybe Japanese Bantams), a llama, and eventually a horse. We wish like crazy we had bought the property next to ours when we bought our acres, but at the time we had no intention of having animals. Oh, how times change!

I'm excited to be here and have learned (and laughed) so much from this great community.

How exciting!

I can't wait to have my own homestead in the near future!!

Welcome to the forum - I'm a newbie myself. Slowly coming out of the shell and leaving comments...although I don't have much to offer at this time! Hopefully soon I will :0)

Welcome, Fletcher!

I understand your regret at not buying the adjacent property. We did the same thing, and passed on buying some acreage next to our place some years ago. Now I wish we'd borrowed some money and bought it so I could have...more sheep, fruit and nut trees, turkeys, maybe a cow, a bigger garden, etc etc. I guess the challenge for all of us is to work with what you've got, right? Good luck with your projects.
