Sure Fire Ways To Get Rid Of Wasps

This question is asked frequently on HT forums, so you might want to make it a sticky;-)...RF

And the winners are:

Some Americans continue to prefer to "do it themselves" to get rid of pests on their property, with tragic results. In June, Mike Harstad of Jamestown, Calif., attempting to eliminate a wasps' nest with a can of Pledge and a cigarette lighter, ultimately burned down his mobile home and contents and destroyed an outbuilding, a truck, a boat and a trailer. [MyMotherLode.com (KVML-AM, Sonora, Calif.), 7-1-07]

In August, a Whitehall, Pa., man, William Sekol, 82, attempting to destroy a yellow jackets' nest beneath a storm sewer grate in his front yard, put a dried tree over the grate, doused it with gasoline, and lit it (supposedly to suffocate the yellow jackets underneath). However, some gasoline ran into the sewer, where its fumes combusted. In the resulting explosion, Sekol's mustache and eyebrows were singed. [Allentown Morning Call, 8-7-07]

Someone's been reading the Darwin Awards. I am constantly amaze at peoples' stupidity. Whenever I am fixing to do something, I pause and ask myself,"will I Darwin myself if I do this?'

But they did solve the wasp problem, In a non common since kind of way. Just like a person who wants to burn a few limbs and goes and get a burning permit. Once he gets the permit he'll go home and set a fire with the wind blowing 75 mph and then when he's questioned about burning down his and two of his neighbors houses, he says I have this burning permit. Thats about all he has, he certianly lacking in common sense as well. Had to come back and tell this. I know a guy(shame to tell) that was trimming some tree limbs up around his house. He was using a 12 ft ladder and a chain saw. He proped the ladder up on an over head limb in a pine tree, climbed the ladder with the saw running and cut the same limb that the ladder was RESTING ON. Folks, we meet these and others like them, on our nations highways every day. Dont that send shivers up your spine?

There was thread about this on another agricultural forum just a few months ago. Lady burned down her coop because she would go around torching spiderwebs.

I was the official jerk for suggesting she use a broom instead of fire.

I kinda let the wasps alone around my place. They keep down the other pests, and I get stung maybe once every two or three years. Seems like a fair trade off.

The wasps take care of so many other pests, seems like people should know this...I realize you don't want them at your doorway. We wiped down the porch ceiling w/orange oil & none have built their nests in years. They are on tree limbs, etc.

LOL pests do have their uses.
I have lots of wasps around but never been stung. I like that they'll eat flies.

Well, this was entertaining and a bit desheartening to be reminded about just how stupid some of our species can be. sigh....

It is a good thing to remind people that learning what species is what, is a good thing to know. Not all of that family of creatures are the same. Some are very important pollinators too (indeed they are vital to our existance!)as well as being the bug predators already mentioned. Some are parasitic and help with fruit tree troubles. Some of this family are really "Grumpy"n as we all know...others are quite mild and calm and forgiving.

What it comes down to though is that nature does not operate on what is pleasing or "good" or "bad" to us. It operates on it's own scale and own business. All species of vespids are important to the all over heath of our ecosystem. As far as I can tell humans are the only species that contributes nothing at all and indeed just harms and destroys as it goes and as our numbers grow.

I cut these creatures some slack and don't bother them and they don't bother me. Fingers crossed here. LOL
